Jeremiah 17 · Grade 5
Blessed Is the One Whose Confidence Is in Yahweh
Read and Think
Jeremiah 17 opens by saying the sin of Judah was engraved on the tablet of their heart. Even their children remembered their altars to other gods. God warned that their treasures would be given away. Then the chapter turns to a wisdom contrast that echoes Psalm 1. Cursed is the man who trusts in man, relies on strength of flesh, and whose heart departs from Yahweh. He is like a bush in the desert in an uninhabited salt land.
Blessed is the man who trusts in Yahweh, and whose confidence is in Yahweh. He will be as a tree planted by the waters, who spreads out its roots by the river. The image does not promise there will be no heat or drought. It promises that the tree will not be concerned in the year of drought and will not cease from yielding fruit. The difference is the hidden source beneath the soil.
The heart is deceitful above all things and it is exceedingly corrupt. Who can know it? God answered that he searches the mind and tries the heart. God is called the spring of living waters, echoing chapter 2. Jeremiah prayed, Heal me, O Yahweh, and I will be healed. God then sent Jeremiah to the gates to call Judah to keep the Sabbath. Faithful rest would show trust in God, and the city's future was tied to it.
