A New Way Home

Name Date

Read the Story

God asked Jeremiah to live in a special way. He was not to marry or have children in that place. He was not to go to big feasts. His life was a sign that hard days were coming.

God said his eyes were on all their ways. Nothing was hidden from him. The people had followed other gods instead of him.

But God also gave hope. Long ago he brought Israel out of Egypt. One day people would talk about an even bigger rescue. God would bring his people back from the land of the north to the land he gave their fathers. Jeremiah called God his strength and his refuge.

Memory Verse

Yahweh, my strength, my stronghold, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the nations will come to you from the ends of the earth, and will say, “Our fathers have inherited nothing but lies, vanity and things in which there is no profit.

Greater Than the Exodus

Name Date

Read and Think

God made Jeremiah's own life a message. He told Jeremiah not to take a wife or have sons or daughters in this place. He was not to enter the house of mourning or the house of feasting. By staying away, Jeremiah showed that normal life in Jerusalem would soon be interrupted.

When people asked why such trouble was coming, Jeremiah was to explain that their fathers had forsaken God and that they had done even worse. God said his eyes are on all their ways. They are not hidden from his face.

Then came a surprising promise. People used to swear by the God who brought Israel out of Egypt. In the future they would swear by the God who brought Israel back from the land of the north and from all the countries where he had driven them. Jeremiah responded in praise, calling God his strength, his stronghold, and his refuge. He even saw nations coming from the ends of the earth to God.

  1. Why was Jeremiah told not to go to feasts or funerals?

  2. What does God say about their ways?

Jeremiah 16 · Grade 5

My Strength and My Stronghold

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 16 is a sobering chapter. God told Jeremiah not to take a wife or have children in this place, because the coming judgment would bring grievous deaths. He was not to enter the house of mourning, because God had taken away his peace, even loving kindness and tender mercies, from this people. Nor was he to join the house of feasting. Jeremiah's lonely life became a living sermon about what was coming.

The reason was plain. Each generation had done worse than the one before, walking in the stubbornness of an evil heart. God declared that his eyes are on all their ways. They are not hidden from my face. God spoke of sending fishermen and hunters to search them out, a picture of judgment no one could escape.

Yet the chapter contains a bright promise. The days were coming when people would no longer speak of the God who brought Israel out of Egypt, but of the God who brought them from the land of the north and from all the countries where he had driven them. Jeremiah answered with a confession of faith. Yahweh, my strength, my stronghold, and my refuge in the day of affliction. He foresaw nations confessing that their fathers had inherited nothing but lies, and asking whether a man can make gods which are no gods.

Show What You Know

  1. What had God taken away from the people?

  2. What did the fishermen and hunters picture?

  3. How would the return from the north compare to the exodus?

  4. What would the nations confess?
