Jeremiah 14 · Grade 5

Work for Your Name's Sake

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 14 opens with Yahweh's word concerning the drought. The description is vivid and painful. Nobles sent their little ones to the waters, but they found no water and covered their heads. Because the ground was cracked, the plowmen were disappointed. The doe abandoned her newborn, and wild donkeys panted like jackals because there was no grass.

The people responded with confession. Though our iniquities testify against us, work for your name's sake, Yahweh. They called him the hope of Israel and asked why he should be like a foreigner or a traveler who stays only a night. Yet you, Yahweh, are in the middle of us, and we are called by your name. Don't leave us. God answered that the people loved to wander, and he told Jeremiah not to pray for their good. Their fasting would not change a heart that refused to turn.

Jeremiah protested that the prophets were promising lasting peace. God replied that the prophets were prophesying lies in his name, and he had not sent them. The chapter ends with Jeremiah's lament and a closing confession of trust. Are there any among the vanities of the nations that can cause rain? Or can the sky give showers? The answer is no. Only Yahweh, who has made all these things, can, and so the people would wait for him.
