Jeremiah 14 · Grade 4

When the Rain Stopped

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 14 describes a terrible drought. Judah mourned, and the cry of Jerusalem went up. Nobles sent their little ones to the cisterns. They found no water and came back with empty jars. The plowmen covered their heads because the ground was cracked. Even the wild donkeys stood on the bare heights panting for air.

The people prayed a humble prayer. They admitted their iniquities and asked God to act for his name's sake. They called him the hope of Israel and its Savior in the time of trouble. They said that God was in the middle of them and they were called by his name.

Jeremiah told God that the prophets kept promising peace with no sword or famine. God answered that those prophets were telling lies in his name. He had not sent them. The chapter closes with faith. Are there any among the vanities of the nations that can cause rain? The people confessed that only God could, and they would wait for him.
