Running with Horses

Name Date

Read the Story

Jeremiah told God that God is always right. Then he asked a hard question. Why do wicked people seem to do well? They talked about God, but their hearts were far from him.

God answered with a picture. If running with people on foot made Jeremiah tired, how could he run with horses? Harder days were coming, and God would make Jeremiah strong enough.

God was sad about his land. Many shepherds had ruined his vineyard. But God made a promise. After the hard times, he would return and have compassion. He would bring every man to his heritage and to his land.

Memory Verse

Contending with Horses

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah began his prayer by saying God is righteous. Yet he wanted to plead a case. Why does the way of the wicked prosper? God had planted them and they bore fruit. God was near in their mouth, and far from their heart.

God's answer did not explain everything. It gave Jeremiah a challenge. If you have run with the footmen, and they have wearied you, then how can you contend with horses? Even Jeremiah's own family had dealt treacherously with him. Jeremiah needed endurance for harder days ahead.

God also shared his grief. He spoke of his house, his heritage, and his vineyard being ruined by many shepherds. The land mourned because no man lays it to heart. Yet God promised compassion. After uprooting the nations, he would bring them back. If they learned the ways of his people, they would be built up among them.

Jeremiah 12 · Grade 5

You Are Righteous, Yahweh

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 12 opens with one of the prophet's honest complaints. You are righteous, Yahweh, when I contend with you; yet I would like to plead a case with you. Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Jeremiah affirmed God's justice before raising his question. The wicked seemed rooted and fruitful, near to God in their mouth but far from their heart.

God's reply is surprising. Instead of a full explanation, he warned Jeremiah that things would get harder. If running with footmen tired him, how would he contend with horses? If he felt secure only in a land of peace, how would he do in the thick growth of the Jordan? Even Jeremiah's brothers and his father's house had betrayed him. God called him to grow in endurance.

Then God spoke as a grieving owner. He had forsaken his house and given his beloved into the hand of her enemies. Many shepherds had trampled his vineyard and made his pleasant portion a desolate wilderness. The whole land is made desolate, because no man lays it to heart. Yet the chapter ends with mercy. God promised to return and have compassion on his people and even on neighboring nations, if they would diligently learn his ways.

Show What You Know

  1. What did Jeremiah affirm before asking his question?

  2. What did the thick growth of the Jordan picture?

  4. What hope did God offer even to the nations?
