A Green Olive Tree

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Jeremiah to remind the people of the covenant. A covenant is a promise between God and people. When God brought their fathers out of Egypt, he told them to obey his voice. Then they would be his people, and he would be their God.

The people did not obey. They walked in the stubbornness of their evil hearts. God had once called them a green olive tree, beautiful with goodly fruit. Now the tree was broken.

Some men from Jeremiah's hometown of Anathoth made plans against him. Jeremiah did not know at first. He was like a gentle lamb. Then Yahweh gave him knowledge of it. Jeremiah trusted God, who judges righteously.

Jeremiah 11 · Grade 4

A Covenant and a Plot

Name Date

Read and Think

God told Jeremiah to hear the words of this covenant and speak them to Judah and Jerusalem. The covenant came from the day God brought Israel out of Egypt, out of the iron furnace. The promise was clear. Obey God's voice, and they would be his people and he would be their God. Jeremiah answered, Amen, Yahweh.

But the people of Judah had turned back to the sins of their forefathers. They followed other gods as many as their cities. God told Jeremiah not to pray for them in this time, because they had broken the covenant. God had called them a green olive tree, but now its branches were broken.

Then came a personal danger. Men from Jeremiah's hometown of Anathoth secretly planned to silence him. Jeremiah said he was like a gentle lamb that did not know their plans. God revealed the plot. Jeremiah brought his cause to God, who judges righteously and tests the heart and the mind.

  2. How did Jeremiah answer the covenant words?

  3. What had happened to the green olive tree?

Jeremiah 11 · Grade 5

The Gentle Lamb

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 11 recalls the covenant of Sinai. God told Jeremiah to proclaim the words of this covenant in the cities of Judah. When God brought Israel out of the iron furnace of Egypt, he said, Obey my voice and do them. Then he would establish the oath he swore to their fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey. Jeremiah responded, Amen, Yahweh.

Yet the people repeated the failures of their ancestors. A conspiracy is found among the men of Judah, God said, because they returned to the iniquities of their forefathers and followed other gods. Judah had as many gods as cities. God once called them a green olive tree, beautiful with goodly fruit, but now the tree was set ablaze and its branches broken.

The second half turns personal. Men of Anathoth, Jeremiah's own hometown, plotted to cut him off so his name would be remembered no more. Jeremiah said he was like a gentle lamb, unaware of their plans, until Yahweh gave him knowledge of it. He prayed to Yahweh of Armies, who judges righteously, who tests the heart and the mind. He left justice in God's hands rather than seeking revenge himself.

Show What You Know

  1. What oath did God promise to establish?

  2. What was the conspiracy in Judah?

  3. Who plotted against Jeremiah?

  4. How did Jeremiah respond to the plot?
