Jeremiah 11 · Grade 4
A Covenant and a Plot
Read and Think
God told Jeremiah to hear the words of this covenant and speak them to Judah and Jerusalem. The covenant came from the day God brought Israel out of Egypt, out of the iron furnace. The promise was clear. Obey God's voice, and they would be his people and he would be their God. Jeremiah answered, Amen, Yahweh.
But the people of Judah had turned back to the sins of their forefathers. They followed other gods as many as their cities. God told Jeremiah not to pray for them in this time, because they had broken the covenant. God had called them a green olive tree, but now its branches were broken.
Then came a personal danger. Men from Jeremiah's hometown of Anathoth secretly planned to silence him. Jeremiah said he was like a gentle lamb that did not know their plans. God revealed the plot. Jeremiah brought his cause to God, who judges righteously and tests the heart and the mind.
