The True God

Read the Story

God told his people not to learn the way of the nations. Some nations cut down a tree and made an idol from it. They covered it with silver and gold. They used nails and hammers so it would not fall over.

God said idols are like a carved post. They cannot speak. They must be carried because they cannot move. There is no reason to be afraid of them.

But Yahweh is the true God. He is the living God and an everlasting King. God made the earth by his power. When he speaks, the waters in the heavens roar and he sends the rain. Jeremiah said there is no one like you, Yahweh.

Scarecrows and the Living God

Name Date

Read and Think

God warned his people not to copy the customs of the nations. Workers cut a tree from the forest and shaped it with an ax. They decorated it with silver and gold and fastened it with nails and hammers so it would not move. God said such idols are like a carved palm tree. They cannot speak and must be carried.

Then Jeremiah praised God. There is no one like you, Yahweh. You are great, and your name is great in might. He called God King of the nations. Idols are a work of delusion, made by people, but God is the maker of all things.

God made the earth by his power and stretched out the heavens by his understanding. He makes lightnings for the rain and brings the wind out of his treasuries. Jeremiah also admitted that people cannot direct their own steps. He prayed for God to correct him gently, not in anger.

  1. How were the idols made?

Jeremiah 10 · Grade 5

The Maker of All Things

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 10 is a sharp contrast between idols and the living God. God told Israel, Don't learn the way of the nations, and don't be dismayed at the signs of the sky. A craftsman cuts a tree, shapes it, covers it with silver and gold, and nails it down so it can't move. They are like a palm tree, of turned work, and don't speak.

The chapter keeps returning to praise. There is no one like you, Yahweh. You are great, and your name is great in might. But Yahweh is the true God. He is the living God, and an everlasting King. The idols did not make the heavens and the earth, and they will perish. God made the earth by his power. He established the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.

The portion of Jacob is not like these; for he is the maker of all things. The chapter ends with the coming exile and a humble prayer. Yahweh, I know that the way of man is not in himself. It is not in man who walks to direct his steps. Jeremiah asked God to correct him gently, not in anger, so he would not be reduced to nothing.

  1. What picture shows how powerless idols are?

  2. How does verse 12 describe God's creating work?

  3. What does the portion of Jacob mean here?

  4. What did Jeremiah admit in verse 23?
