Jeremiah 10 · Grade 5
The Maker of All Things
Read and Think
Jeremiah 10 is a sharp contrast between idols and the living God. God told Israel, Don't learn the way of the nations, and don't be dismayed at the signs of the sky. A craftsman cuts a tree, shapes it, covers it with silver and gold, and nails it down so it can't move. They are like a palm tree, of turned work, and don't speak.
The chapter keeps returning to praise. There is no one like you, Yahweh. You are great, and your name is great in might. But Yahweh is the true God. He is the living God, and an everlasting King. The idols did not make the heavens and the earth, and they will perish. God made the earth by his power. He established the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.
The portion of Jacob is not like these; for he is the maker of all things. The chapter ends with the coming exile and a humble prayer. Yahweh, I know that the way of man is not in himself. It is not in man who walks to direct his steps. Jeremiah asked God to correct him gently, not in anger, so he would not be reduced to nothing.
