I Am with You

Read the Story

Jeremiah was the son of Hilkiah. Hilkiah was a priest in Anathoth. God's word came to Jeremiah when Josiah was king of Judah.

God told Jeremiah that he knew him before he was formed in the womb. God had set him apart to be a prophet to the nations. Jeremiah answered that he did not know how to speak, for he was a child. God told him not to say that. He must go where God sent him.

Then God touched Jeremiah's mouth and put his words in it. God showed him an almond branch. God said that he watches over his word to do it. God promised to be with Jeremiah and rescue him.

“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I sanctified you. I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

Jeremiah 1 · Grade 4

Appointed a Prophet

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 1 begins by naming the prophet. He was Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, from a family of priests in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin. God's word came to him in the thirteenth year of King Josiah. His work went on through the reigns of Jehoiakim and Zedekiah, until Jerusalem was carried away captive.

God told Jeremiah that before he was formed in the womb, God knew him and set him apart. He was appointed a prophet to the nations. Jeremiah protested that he did not know how to speak, because he was a child. God told him not to say that, and promised to be with him to rescue him. Then God touched his mouth and put his words there.

God gave Jeremiah two pictures. An almond branch showed that God watches over his word to perform it. A boiling cauldron tipping from the north showed that trouble would come from the north, because the people had forsaken God. God made Jeremiah strong like a fortified city and an iron pillar. People would fight against him, but they would not win.

Jeremiah 1 · Grade 5

An Iron Pillar

Name Date

Read and Think

The opening verses set Jeremiah in history. He was the son of Hilkiah, one of the priests in Anathoth, and God's word came to him from the thirteenth year of King Josiah until the eleventh year of Zedekiah, when Jerusalem was carried away captive in the fifth month. His ministry therefore spanned the last decades of the kingdom of Judah.

God's call came with startling intimacy. Before Jeremiah was formed in the womb, God knew him; before he was born, God sanctified him and appointed him a prophet to the nations. Jeremiah objected that he was only a child and could not speak. God refused the excuse. Jeremiah must go wherever he was sent and say whatever he was commanded, and he need not be afraid, because God was with him to rescue him. God touched his mouth and set him over nations, to uproot and tear down, to build and to plant.

Two visions followed. The almond branch involved a wordplay, since God said he watches over his word to perform it. The boiling cauldron tipping from the north pictured kingdoms of the north coming against Jerusalem, because the people had forsaken God and worshiped the works of their own hands. Finally God made Jeremiah a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls. Kings, princes, priests and people would fight him, but they would not prevail.
