Jeremiah 1 · Grade 5
An Iron Pillar
Read and Think
The opening verses set Jeremiah in history. He was the son of Hilkiah, one of the priests in Anathoth, and God's word came to him from the thirteenth year of King Josiah until the eleventh year of Zedekiah, when Jerusalem was carried away captive in the fifth month. His ministry therefore spanned the last decades of the kingdom of Judah.
God's call came with startling intimacy. Before Jeremiah was formed in the womb, God knew him; before he was born, God sanctified him and appointed him a prophet to the nations. Jeremiah objected that he was only a child and could not speak. God refused the excuse. Jeremiah must go wherever he was sent and say whatever he was commanded, and he need not be afraid, because God was with him to rescue him. God touched his mouth and set him over nations, to uproot and tear down, to build and to plant.
Two visions followed. The almond branch involved a wordplay, since God said he watches over his word to perform it. The boiling cauldron tipping from the north pictured kingdoms of the north coming against Jerusalem, because the people had forsaken God and worshiped the works of their own hands. Finally God made Jeremiah a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls. Kings, princes, priests and people would fight him, but they would not prevail.
