Come Close to God

Name Date

Read the Story

James says some people fight because they want things for themselves. They do not have what they need because they do not ask God.

God helps people who are humble. Come close to God, and he will come close to you. Do not say mean things about each other. Our life is short, like a mist. So we say, if the Lord wants, we will do this or that.

Memory Verse

“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners. Purify your hearts, you double-minded.”

James 4 · Grade 3

Humble Yourselves

Name Date

Read the Story

James 4 asks, Where do wars and fightings among you come from? Don’t they come from your pleasures that war in your members? You don’t have, because you don’t ask. You ask and don’t receive, because you ask with wrong motives.

God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.

Do not speak against one another. Some people say, Today or tomorrow let’s go into this city and spend a year there, trade, and make a profit. But you don’t know what tomorrow will bring. Your life is like a vapor. Instead say, If the Lord wills, we will both live, and do this or that.

Memory Verse

“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.”

James 4 · Grade 4

Submit to God

Name Date

Read and Think

James 4 traces quarrels to their source. Fights come from desires for pleasure that war inside people. They want what they don’t have. They don’t have, because they don’t ask. When they do ask, they ask with wrong motives, to spend it on their own pleasures. James calls friendship with the world hostility toward God.

But he gives more grace. The Scripture says, God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. So James gives a list of commands: Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands and purify your hearts. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.

James warns against speaking against one another, because only God is the true lawgiver and judge. He also warns against proud planning. Some say they will travel, trade and make a profit, but they do not know what tomorrow holds. Life is a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes. To him who knows to do good and doesn’t do it, to him it is sin.

James 4 · Grade 5

If the Lord Wills

Name Date

Read and Think

James 4 begins with questions: Where do wars and fightings among you come from? Don’t they come from your pleasures that war in your members? Unmet desires lead to envy and conflict. Prayer is neglected or twisted: You don’t have, because you don’t ask. You ask, and don’t receive, because you ask with wrong motives. James uses the Old Testament picture of unfaithfulness to describe divided loyalty: friendship with the world is hostility toward God.

Yet the answer is grace. He gives more grace. Therefore it says, God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Short commands follow. Be subject to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, purify your hearts, and mourn over sin. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.

The chapter then addresses two kinds of pride. One is judging a brother, which sets a person above the law; only one is the lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. The other is confident planning that leaves God out. Come now, you who say, Today or tomorrow let’s go into this city and spend a year there, trade, and make a profit. Yet you don’t know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are a vapor. Instead you ought to say, If the Lord wills, we will both live, and do this or that. James closes with a searching line: To him therefore who knows to do good and doesn’t do it, to him it is sin.
