God told His people not to party like the other nations. They had turned away from God. Their harvest would not feed them.

The people said God's prophet was a fool. But God remembered when He first found His people. They were like sweet grapes in the desert! God still wanted them to listen to Him.

Memory Verse

“I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness. I saw your fathers as the first ripe in the fig tree at its first season; but they came to Baal Peor, and consecrated themselves to the shameful thing, and became abominable like that which they loved.”

Days of Reckoning

Name Date

Read the Story

Hosea told Israel not to rejoice like the nations. They had been unfaithful to their God. Their threshing floor and wine press would not feed them. They would not dwell in Yahweh's land.

The days of reckoning have come. The people called the prophet a fool. The Bible says, A prophet watches over Ephraim with my God. But the people set traps for him.

God remembered the beginning. I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness. He saw their fathers like the first ripe figs. But they turned to idols. Because they didn't listen to him, they would be wanderers among the nations.

Memory Verse

“I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness. I saw your fathers as the first ripe in the fig tree at its first season; but they came to Baal Peor, and consecrated themselves to the shameful thing, and became abominable like that which they loved.”

Hosea 9 · Grade 4

I Found Israel Like Grapes

Name Date

Read and Think

Hosea 9 begins with a warning. Don't rejoice, Israel, to jubilation like the nations; for you were unfaithful to your God. The threshing floor and the wine press won't feed them. They would not dwell in Yahweh's land, but would go to Assyria.

The days of visitation have come. The days of reckoning have come. Instead of listening, Israel will consider the prophet to be a fool. They had deeply corrupted themselves, and God would remember their iniquity.

God looks back with sorrow: I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness. I saw your fathers as the first ripe in the fig tree. Finding grapes in a desert is a delight. But Israel turned to shameful idols. My God will cast them away, because they didn't listen to him; and they will be wanderers among the nations.

  1. Why would the threshing floor and wine press not feed them?

  2. How did Israel treat the prophet?

Hosea 9 · Grade 5

Wanderers Among the Nations

Name Date

Read and Think

Hosea 9 speaks into a time of celebration. Don't rejoice, Israel, to jubilation like the nations; for you were unfaithful to your God. Israel thought their harvests came from Baal, but God would take them away. They won't dwell in Yahweh's land; but Ephraim will return to Egypt, and they will eat unclean food in Assyria. The people who forgot God would lose the land God gave.

The days of visitation have come. The days of reckoning have come. Israel's response was to mock God's messenger: Israel will consider the prophet to be a fool. Yet Hosea held his post: A prophet watches over Ephraim with my God. God's messengers are often rejected, but they are faithful.

God remembered His first love: I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness. I saw your fathers as the first ripe in the fig tree at its first season. But at Baal Peor they turned to shame. The chapter then speaks harsh judgment and ends: My God will cast them away, because they didn't listen to him; and they will be wanderers among the nations. Not listening to God leads to losing one's home.

  1. What did Israel think gave them harvests?

  2. Where would Ephraim return and eat unclean food?

  3. How did Israel treat the prophet?

  4. How did God first find Israel?

  5. What would they become?
