Planting the Wind

Name Date

Read the Story

A trumpet warned God's people. They had broken God's rules. They made a calf out of gold and called it a god. But a worker made it. It was not God!

God said they were planting the wind, and they would get a whirlwind. Bad choices bring bad results. God wrote His law for them, but they forgot Him. They forgot that God made them.

Memory Verse

“For they sow the wind, and they will reap the whirlwind. He has no standing grain. The stalk will yield no head. If it does yield, strangers will swallow it up.”

God told Hosea to put the trumpet to his lips. Israel had broken God's covenant and rebelled against His law. They chose kings without asking God.

They made idols of their silver and gold. In Samaria they had a calf idol. God said the workman made it, and it is no God. It would be broken in pieces.

God said, For they sow the wind, and they will reap the whirlwind. Their bad choices would bring big trouble. God wrote for them the many things of His law, but they treated it as strange. Israel has forgotten his Maker.

Hosea 8 · Grade 4

They Will Reap the Whirlwind

Name Date

Read and Think

Hosea 8 opens with an alarm: Put the trumpet to your lips! Israel had broken God's covenant and rebelled against His law. They cried, My God, we, Israel, acknowledge you! But their actions showed they had cast off what is good.

They set up kings, but not by God. They made idols of silver and gold. The calf of Samaria was made by a workman, and it is no God. It shall be broken in pieces. Things people make with their own hands cannot save them.

God used a farming picture: For they sow the wind, and they will reap the whirlwind. Sin grows into something bigger than what was planted. God said, I wrote for him the many things of my law, but they were regarded as a strange thing. For Israel has forgotten his Maker and built palaces.

Show What You Know

  1. What did Israel claim even while they cast off what is good?

  2. What will happen to the calf of Samaria?

  3. What does the sowing picture show about sin?

  4. How were God's laws regarded?

Hosea 8 · Grade 5

Forgotten Maker

Name Date

Read and Think

Hosea 8 begins with a warning trumpet and an eagle over Yahweh's house, because Israel had broken God's covenant and rebelled against His law. The people still said, My God, we, Israel, acknowledge you! But words of faith could not cover the fact that Israel has cast off that which is good.

Israel's two great failures were kings and idols. They have set up kings, but not by me. They have made princes, and I didn't approve. With their silver and gold they made idols, including the calf of Samaria. The workman made it, and it is no God. Idols are made by people; the true God made people.

Then comes the famous farming proverb: For they sow the wind, and they will reap the whirlwind. Choices grow, and their harvest is larger than the seed. God had given His law, but they treated it as a strange thing, and Israel has forgotten his Maker. In the New Testament, Paul writes that God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap (Galatians 6:7).

Show What You Know

  1. What did the people still say to God?

  2. What were Israel's two great failures?

  3. What is the difference between idols and the true God?

  4. What does the whirlwind proverb teach?

  5. In the New Testament, what does Paul say a man will reap?
