A Silly Dove

Name Date

Read the Story

God wanted to heal Israel. But when He looked at them, He saw their sin. They told lies, and they did not think about the fact that God remembered all their wickedness.

God said, Ephraim is a pancake not turned over. They were only half-baked in their love for God. Like a person with gray hair who does not notice, they did not see how weak they had become.

God also said Ephraim is like an easily deceived dove, without understanding. They called to Egypt and went to Assyria for help. They did not cry out to God with their whole heart.

Memory Verse

“They haven’t cried to me with their heart, but they howl on their beds. They assemble themselves for grain and new wine. They turn away from me.”

Hosea 7 · Grade 4

Ephraim Is a Pancake

Name Date

Read and Think

Hosea 7 begins with God's desire to heal: When I would heal Israel, then the iniquity of Ephraim is uncovered. Each time God reached out, more sin came to light. They don't consider in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness.

Hosea uses everyday pictures. Their anger burned like a hot oven. Ephraim mixes himself among the nations. Ephraim is a pancake not turned over, cooked on only one side. Strangers had taken his strength, and he doesn't realize it, like gray hairs a person does not notice.

Ephraim is like an easily deceived dove, without understanding. They call to Egypt. They go to Assyria. God said, They haven't cried to me with their heart. They return, but not to the Most High. They were like a faulty bow that misses its target.

Hosea 7 · Grade 5

Not with Their Heart

Name Date

Read and Think

Hosea 7 shows God as a doctor who wants to heal, but finds the sickness deeper than expected. When I would heal Israel, then the iniquity of Ephraim is uncovered. The people did not take sin seriously: they don't consider in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness.

Hosea paints vivid pictures. Their hearts are like an oven, with anger that smolders all night. Ephraim mixes himself among the nations. Ephraim is a pancake not turned over, cooked on one side and raw on the other. Strangers have devoured his strength, and he doesn't realize it. Gray hairs are here and there on him, but he did not notice how weak he had become.

Ephraim is like an easily deceived dove, without understanding, flying between Egypt and Assyria for help. God said, Though I would redeem them, yet they have spoken lies against me. They haven't cried to me with their heart, but they howl on their beds. They return, but not to the Most High. They are like a faulty bow. Turning back must be real and must be toward God.

Show What You Know

  1. What did God find when He wanted to heal Israel?

  2. What do the people not consider in their hearts?

  3. What does the pancake picture show?

  4. Where did the dove fly for help?
