Hosea 7 · Grade 5

Not with Their Heart

Name Date

Read and Think

Hosea 7 shows God as a doctor who wants to heal, but finds the sickness deeper than expected. When I would heal Israel, then the iniquity of Ephraim is uncovered. The people did not take sin seriously: they don't consider in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness.

Hosea paints vivid pictures. Their hearts are like an oven, with anger that smolders all night. Ephraim mixes himself among the nations. Ephraim is a pancake not turned over, cooked on one side and raw on the other. Strangers have devoured his strength, and he doesn't realize it. Gray hairs are here and there on him, but he did not notice how weak he had become.

Ephraim is like an easily deceived dove, without understanding, flying between Egypt and Assyria for help. God said, Though I would redeem them, yet they have spoken lies against me. They haven't cried to me with their heart, but they howl on their beds. They return, but not to the Most High. They are like a faulty bow. Turning back must be real and must be toward God.
