Hosea 4 · Grade 3

A Charge Against the Land

Name Date

Read the Story

God had a charge against the people of Israel. He said there was no truth, nor goodness, nor knowledge of God in the land. Instead there was lying and stealing.

God said, My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. The priests had forgotten God's law, so the people did not learn it either. God said it will be like people, like priest.

The people asked a wooden idol for answers. They were stubborn, like a stubborn heifer, a young cow that will not go where it is led. God wanted to care for them like a lamb in a meadow, but they would not let Him.

Memory Verse

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you, that you may be no priest to me. Because you have forgotten your God’s law, I will also forget your children.”

Hosea 4 · Grade 4

Destroyed for Lack of Knowledge

Name Date

Read and Think

Hosea 4 begins like a court case. Yahweh has a charge against the inhabitants of the land. Indeed there is no truth, nor goodness, nor knowledge of God in the land. Without knowing God, the people broke His commands, and the land itself suffered.

God placed much of the blame on the priests. My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because the priests rejected knowledge and forgot the law of God, the people did not know God either. Leaders who forget God lead others away.

The people consult with their wooden idol, and answer to a stick of wood. They were not faithful to God. Israel has behaved extremely stubbornly, like a stubborn heifer. God's sad question is how He can feed them like a lamb in a meadow when they refuse Him.

Hosea 4 · Grade 5

Knowledge of God

Name Date

Read and Think

Hosea 4 turns from Hosea's family to a formal charge against Israel. Hear Yahweh's word, you children of Israel. The charge is short: there is no truth, nor goodness, nor knowledge of God in the land. What follows is a list of broken commands: There is cursing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery. When people do not know God, they stop treating others rightly.

The central verse is a warning to leaders. My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you, that you may be no priest to me. The priests were supposed to teach God's law, but they had forgotten it. It will be like people, like priest.

Without God's Word, the people turned to idols: they consult with their wooden idol, and answer to a stick of wood. Hosea calls this unfaithfulness to God. Israel has behaved extremely stubbornly, like a stubborn heifer. Knowledge of God in Hosea means more than facts. It means a close, faithful relationship with Him.

Show What You Know

  1. What is God's short charge against the land?

  2. What list follows the charge?

  3. Why were the priests rejected?

  4. What did the people consult instead of God?

  5. What does knowledge of God mean in Hosea?
