Hosea 4 · Grade 5

Knowledge of God

Name Date

Read and Think

Hosea 4 turns from Hosea's family to a formal charge against Israel. Hear Yahweh's word, you children of Israel. The charge is short: there is no truth, nor goodness, nor knowledge of God in the land. What follows is a list of broken commands: There is cursing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery. When people do not know God, they stop treating others rightly.

The central verse is a warning to leaders. My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you, that you may be no priest to me. The priests were supposed to teach God's law, but they had forgotten it. It will be like people, like priest.

Without God's Word, the people turned to idols: they consult with their wooden idol, and answer to a stick of wood. Hosea calls this unfaithfulness to God. Israel has behaved extremely stubbornly, like a stubborn heifer. Knowledge of God in Hosea means more than facts. It means a close, faithful relationship with Him.
