Hosea 3 · Grade 5
Redeeming Love
Read and Think
Hosea 3 returns to Hosea's own life. His wife had left him, and Yahweh said to him, Go again, love a woman loved by another, and an adulteress, even as Yahweh loves the children of Israel, though they turn to other gods. Hosea's story is meant to show God's story. God keeps loving people who have betrayed Him.
Hosea bought her for fifteen pieces of silver and a homer and a half of barley. He did not simply wait for her to come back; he paid to bring her home. He asked her to stay faithful with him many days. Love that redeems is costly.
Then Hosea explains the picture. Israel would live many days without king, without prince, without sacrifice, without sacred stone, and without ephod or idols. Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek Yahweh their God, and David their king. In the New Testament, Jesus is the promised king from David's family. In the New Testament, Jesus also told of a father who saw his son coming home: But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was moved with compassion, and ran, fell on his neck, and kissed him (Luke 15:20).
