Hosea 10 · Grade 3

A Divided Heart

Name Date

Read the Story

Israel is a luxuriant vine that produces his fruit. But the more they had, the more altars they built for idols. Their heart is divided. They loved God a little, and idols a lot.

They made promises, but they did not keep them. Their calf idols would be carried away. Samaria and her king float away like a twig on the water.

God called them to a new start. Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap according to kindness. Break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek Yahweh. Hard ground must be broken before seeds can grow.

Memory Verse

“Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap according to kindness. Break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek Yahweh, until he comes and rains righteousness on you.”

Hosea 10 · Grade 4

Time to Seek Yahweh

Name Date

Read and Think

Hosea 10 begins with a picture: Israel is a luxuriant vine. God had blessed them, but according to the abundance of his fruit he has multiplied his altars. Blessings led them to idols instead of thanks. Their heart is divided.

They made promises, swearing falsely in making covenants. The calf idol they loved would be carried to Assyria. Samaria and her king float away like a twig on the water. The thorn and the thistle will come up on their altars.

In the middle of warning, God gives a call. Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap according to kindness. Break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek Yahweh, until he comes and rains righteousness on you. But they had plowed wickedness and eaten the fruit of lies, because they trusted in their own way.

Hosea 10 · Grade 5

Sow in Righteousness

Name Date

Read and Think

Hosea 10 shows how blessing can be misused. Israel is a luxuriant vine that produces his fruit. According to the abundance of his fruit he has multiplied his altars. As his land prospered, they adorned their sacred stones. The richer they became, the more they worshiped idols. Hosea's diagnosis: Their heart is divided.

Their divided heart showed in broken words: They make promises, swearing falsely in making covenants. Therefore judgment springs up like poisonous weeds in the furrows of the field. Their calf idol would be carried to Assyria for a present to a great king. Samaria and her king float away like a twig on the water. The things they trusted could not protect them.

Into this God speaks a farmer's call: Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap according to kindness. Break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek Yahweh, until he comes and rains righteousness on you. Fallow ground is hard, unplowed soil. A heart must be broken open to receive God's Word. But Israel had plowed wickedness and reaped iniquity, for they trusted in their way. In the New Testament, Jesus said, Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled (Matthew 5:6).

Show What You Know

  1. What happened as Israel's land prospered?

  2. What is Hosea's diagnosis?

  3. What springs up like poisonous weeds?

  4. What is fallow ground?

  5. In the New Testament, who did Jesus say are blessed?
