Not My People, Then My People

Name Date

Read the Story

When Yahweh spoke at first by Hosea, He told him to take a wife. So Hosea went and took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim. God was using Hosea's family to show Israel that they had not been faithful to God.

They had three children. God told Hosea what to name them. The first son was Jezreel. The daughter was Lo-Ruhamah, which means not pitied. The second son was Lo-Ammi, which means not my people. These names were a sad message to Israel.

But God did not stop there. He promised that the number of the children of Israel will be as the sand of the sea. In the place where it was said to them, You are not my people, they will be called children of the living God.

Memory Verse

Hosea 1 · Grade 4

A Living Picture

Name Date

Read and Think

Hosea was a prophet to Israel. When Yahweh spoke at first by Hosea, He told him to marry. Hosea's home would become a living picture. God said the land had been unfaithful to Him, like a marriage where one person does not keep their promise. So he went and took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim.

God named each child. Jezreel pointed to a coming judgment on the king's house. Lo-Ruhamah means not pitied, because God would no longer show mercy to Israel for a time. Lo-Ammi means not my people. Still, God promised mercy to Judah. He would save them by Yahweh their God, not by bow, sword, or horses.

Then comes a surprise. The number of the children of Israel will be as the sand of the sea. In the place where it was said to them, You are not my people, God said it will be said to them, You are children of the living God. Judah and Israel will be gathered together under one head.

Show What You Know

Hosea 1 · Grade 5

You Are Children of the Living God

Name Date

Read and Think

Hosea prophesied to the northern kingdom of Israel. When Yahweh spoke at first by Hosea, He told him to take a wife of prostitution, for the land commits great adultery, departing from Yahweh. God was not describing a scene for its own sake. He was using Hosea's marriage as a living picture of how Israel had left God, its faithful husband, to follow other gods.

Hosea took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim, and God named the children. Jezreel announced that God would cause the kingdom of the house of Israel to cease. Lo-Ruhamah meant God would no longer have mercy on the house of Israel. Lo-Ammi declared, you are not my people, and I will not be yours. The names reversed God's promises to Abraham and Moses.

Yet the chapter does not end in judgment. The number of the children of Israel will be as the sand of the sea, which can't be measured or counted. Where they were called not my people, they will be called children of the living God. In the New Testament, Paul quotes Hosea: I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, who was not beloved (Romans 9:25).

Show What You Know

  1. What did Hosea's marriage picture?

  2. What did Lo-Ammi declare?

  3. What would the number of Israel be like?

  4. What will those once called not my people be called?

  5. In the New Testament, who quotes Hosea about God calling a people?

Think About It

  1. God turned not my people into children of the living God. In the New Testament, Paul applies these words to people God has called, not from the Jews only, but also from the Gentiles (Romans 9:24-25). How does that encourage you?

  2. Hosea obeyed God even when it cost him. What could obeying God cost you, and why is He worth it?
