Hosea 1 · Grade 5
You Are Children of the Living God
Read and Think
Hosea prophesied to the northern kingdom of Israel. When Yahweh spoke at first by Hosea, He told him to take a wife of prostitution, for the land commits great adultery, departing from Yahweh. God was not describing a scene for its own sake. He was using Hosea's marriage as a living picture of how Israel had left God, its faithful husband, to follow other gods.
Hosea took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim, and God named the children. Jezreel announced that God would cause the kingdom of the house of Israel to cease. Lo-Ruhamah meant God would no longer have mercy on the house of Israel. Lo-Ammi declared, you are not my people, and I will not be yours. The names reversed God's promises to Abraham and Moses.
Yet the chapter does not end in judgment. The number of the children of Israel will be as the sand of the sea, which can't be measured or counted. Where they were called not my people, they will be called children of the living God. In the New Testament, Paul quotes Hosea: I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, who was not beloved (Romans 9:25).

God turned not my people into children of the living God. In the New Testament, Paul applies these words to people God has called, not from the Jews only, but also from the Gentiles (Romans 9:24-25). How does that encourage you?
Hosea obeyed God even when it cost him. What could obeying God cost you, and why is He worth it?
Memory Verse
“Yet the number of the children of Israel will be as the sand of the sea, which can’t be measured or counted; and it will come to pass that, in the place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’ they will be called ‘sons of the living God.’”
