Written on the Heart

Read the Story

Hebrews 8 sums up the main point. Believers have a high priest who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens. He serves in the true tabernacle which the Lord pitched, not man.

Earthly priests served a copy and shadow of heavenly things. God told Moses to make the tabernacle by the pattern shown to him on the mountain. Jesus has a better ministry. He is the mediator of a better covenant.

God promised a new covenant through Jeremiah. He said he would put his laws into their mind and write them on their heart. All would know him. God said, For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness. I will remember their sins and lawless deeds no more.

For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness. I will remember their sins and lawless deeds no more.”

Hebrews 8 · Grade 4

Copy and Shadow

Name Date

Read and Think

Verse 1 gives the main point of the letter so far. Believers have such a high priest, who sat down on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens. Earthly priests stood because their work was never done. Jesus sat down. He serves in the true tabernacle which the Lord pitched, not man.

The earthly tabernacle was real and holy, but it was a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. A shadow shows that something real is there, but it is not the thing itself. Jesus’ ministry is more excellent, because he is the mediator of a better covenant, which is built on better promises. For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second.

A long quotation from Jeremiah 31 comes next. God promised a new covenant with Israel and Judah. He would put his laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. Everyone, from the least to the greatest, would know him. And God said, I will remember their sins and lawless deeds no more.

Hebrews 8 · Grade 5

Mediator of a Better Covenant

Name Date

Read and Think

Hebrews 8:1 pauses to name the main point: we have such a high priest, who sat down on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens. Sitting matters. Earthly priests never sat while serving, because their sacrifices were never finished. Jesus is enthroned. He is a servant of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord pitched, not man.

Verses 3 to 6 compare two ministries. Earthly priests offered gifts according to the law, but they served a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. God warned Moses, See, you shall make everything according to the pattern that was shown to you on the mountain. The tabernacle was designed to point beyond itself. By contrast, Jesus has obtained a more excellent ministry, because he is the mediator of a better covenant built on better promises.

Verses 7 to 13 quote Jeremiah 31:31-34. The problem with the first covenant was the people, who did not continue in it. So God promised something deeper. I will put my laws into their mind; I will also write them on their heart. I will be their God, and they will be my people. Everyone will know the Lord, from least to greatest, and the promise rests on forgiveness: For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness. I will remember their sins and lawless deeds no more. By calling it new, God made the first covenant old, and what grows old is near to vanishing away.

Show What You Know

  1. Why does it matter that Jesus sat down?

  2. What instruction did God give Moses about the tabernacle?

  3. What does the new covenant promise in Jeremiah 31?

  4. What does calling the covenant new do to the first?
