Hebrews 6 · Grade 3

Sure and Steadfast

Name Date

Read the Story

Hebrews 6 tells believers to press on and grow up in their faith. God will not forget their work and their love. They had served God’s people and kept serving them.

God made a promise to Abraham. He swore by himself, because no one is greater. Abraham patiently endured, and he received what God promised.

God’s promise and his oath can never change, because it is impossible for God to lie. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast.

Hebrews 6 · Grade 4

Imitators of Faith

Name Date

Read and Think

Hebrews 6 begins, let’s press on to perfection. The letter lists basic teachings like repentance, faith, baptisms, and resurrection, and says believers should build on that foundation. Then comes a serious warning about people who taste God’s goodness and then fall away. The picture is of land that drinks the rain but grows only thorns.

Right away the letter says, But, beloved, we are persuaded of better things for you. God saw how the readers loved him by serving the saints. The letter wants each of them to keep the same diligence to the end, not being sluggish, but imitating those who through faith and perseverance inherited the promises.

Abraham is the example. God promised to bless him and multiply him, and he swore by himself. Abraham waited patiently and obtained the promise. God’s promise and oath are two things that cannot change, and in them it is impossible for God to lie. So hope works like an anchor. It holds the soul steady and reaches into God’s presence, where Jesus has gone ahead.

Hebrews 6 · Grade 5

Two Unchangeable Things

Name Date

Read and Think

Hebrews 6 continues the call from chapter 5 to move beyond milk. The first principles are good: repentance, faith toward God, baptisms, laying on of hands, resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. But a foundation is for building on. Verses 4 to 8 then give one of the most serious warnings in the New Testament. It describes people who were enlightened and tasted the heavenly gift and then fell away. Like land that drinks rain but bears only thorns, such a life does not produce what God intended. The letter does not explain exactly who these people are, and these sheets do not guess.

Verse 9 changes the tone completely. But, beloved, we are persuaded of better things for you, and things that accompany salvation. The evidence is their love. They served the saints and kept serving them, and God is not unrighteous, so as to forget this. The letter wants them to keep going with the same diligence, not sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and perseverance inherited the promises.

Abraham shows how. God swore by himself, since he could swear by no one greater, and Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise. People use oaths to end disputes. God added an oath to his promise so that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, his people would have strong encouragement. This hope is an anchor of the soul, sure and steadfast. It enters within the veil, where Jesus went as a forerunner and became a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

Show What You Know

  1. Name three first principles from verses 1 and 2.

  2. What evidence makes the letter confident about the readers?

  3. Why did God add an oath to his promise?

  4. Where does the anchor of hope reach?
