Hebrews 11 · Grade 3

A Better Country

Name Date

Read the Story

Hebrews 11 says faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen. By faith we understand that the universe was made by the word of God. Without faith it is impossible to please him. Whoever comes to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

By faith Noah prepared a ship to save his house. By faith Abraham obeyed and went out, not knowing where he went. He lived in tents, looking for the city whose builder and maker is God. By faith Sarah had a child when she was past age.

By faith Moses left Egypt. By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land. By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after seven days. These people were looking for a better country, a heavenly one. God has prepared a city for them.

Memory Verse

“Without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.”

Example After Example

Name Date

Read and Think

Hebrews 11 opens with a description: Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen. Faith is not wishing. It is trust in God and in what he has promised. The chapter adds that without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him.

Then the writer gives example after example. Abel offered a better sacrifice. Enoch pleased God. Noah built a ship before the flood came. Abraham left home and lived as a stranger in tents with Isaac and Jacob. Sarah received power to conceive when she was past age, since she counted him faithful who had promised.

Moses chose to suffer with God’s people rather than enjoy sin for a season. The people crossed the Red Sea, the walls of Jericho fell, and Rahab welcomed the spies. Others faced suffering for their faith. These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but they saw them from afar.

Show What You Know

  1. How does the chapter describe faith?

  2. Why could Sarah trust God’s promise?

  3. What did Moses choose?

  4. Did these people receive all the promises in their lifetime?

Hebrews 11 · Grade 5

Strangers and Pilgrims

Name Date

Read and Think

Hebrews 11 begins, Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen. Faith looks at God’s promises as solid ground. By faith we understand that the universe has been framed by the word of God. Verse 6 adds a key principle: Without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.

The chapter then moves through Israel’s history. Abel, Enoch and Noah trusted God before the flood. Abraham obeyed when he was called and went out, not knowing where he went. He lived in tents, for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God. These people confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. They desired a better country, a heavenly one, and God is not ashamed to be called their God.

Isaac, Jacob and Joseph spoke in faith about things to come. Moses refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter and endured, as seeing him who is invisible. Rahab welcomed the spies in peace. The writer says time would fail to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets. Some were rescued, and others suffered greatly. All these did not receive the promise in their lifetime, for God provided some better thing concerning us, so that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

Show What You Know

  1. What two things must someone believe who comes to God?

  2. What did these people confess about themselves?

  3. How did Moses endure?

  4. Why were they not made perfect apart from us?

Think About It

  1. How does seeing yourself as a pilgrim change the way you live now?

  2. Why do you think the chapter includes people whose faith was imperfect?

Memory Verse

“Without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.”
