Hebrews 11 · Grade 4
Example After Example
Read and Think
Hebrews 11 opens with a description: Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen. Faith is not wishing. It is trust in God and in what he has promised. The chapter adds that without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him.
Then the writer gives example after example. Abel offered a better sacrifice. Enoch pleased God. Noah built a ship before the flood came. Abraham left home and lived as a stranger in tents with Isaac and Jacob. Sarah received power to conceive when she was past age, since she counted him faithful who had promised.
Moses chose to suffer with God’s people rather than enjoy sin for a season. The people crossed the Red Sea, the walls of Jericho fell, and Rahab welcomed the spies. Others faced suffering for their faith. These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but they saw them from afar.
