Hebrews 1 · Grade 3

The Son Is Over All

Name Date

Read the Story

Hebrews opens with a big idea. God spoke to the fathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways. But at the end of these days he has spoken by his Son. God appointed the Son heir of all things, and through him God made the worlds.

The Son is the radiance of God’s glory, the very image of his substance. He holds up all things by the word of his power. After he purified people of their sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.

Next the chapter compares the Son with the angels. God never called an angel his Son. Instead God says, Let all the angels of God worship him. Angels are serving spirits, sent to help those who will inherit salvation. But of the Son God says, Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.

Memory Verse

But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your Kingdom.

Hebrews 1 · Grade 4

The Radiance of His Glory

Name Date

Read and Think

The letter to the Hebrews does not begin with a greeting. It starts with God speaking. In the past God spoke through the prophets in many parts and many ways. Now he has spoken by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things.

Verse 3 piles up titles. The Son is the radiance of his glory, the very image of his substance. Like light that shines from the sun, the Son shows what God is like. He upholds all things by the word of his power. He also purified people from their sins, then sat down, because the work was finished.

The rest of the chapter uses verses from the Psalms to show that the Son is greater than the angels. Angels are like winds and flames of fire, serving God. The Son is the one who laid the foundation of the earth. The heavens will grow old like a garment, but the Son stays the same, and his years won’t fail.

Show What You Know

  1. How does the letter begin?

  2. What does it mean that the Son is the radiance of God’s glory?

  3. Why did the Son sit down after purifying sins?

  4. What will happen to the heavens, and what stays the same?

Hebrews 1 · Grade 5

The Son Is Better Than the Angels

Name Date

Read and Think

Hebrews 1 is one long sentence of praise in its first four verses. God spoke to the fathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, and now he has spoken by his Son. The prophets were real messengers from God, but they were pieces of a larger story. The Son is the final and full word.

Verse 3 gives seven claims about the Son. He is heir of all things. He made the worlds. He is the radiance of God’s glory and the very image of his substance. He upholds all things by the word of his power. He purified people of their sins. He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. Each claim shows the Son doing what only God does.

Verses 5 to 14 quote the Psalms and other Scriptures to show that the Son is better than the angels. God calls him Son. Angels worship him. His throne is forever and ever, and his kingdom has a scepter of uprightness. He laid the foundation of the earth, and he will roll up the heavens like a mantle. The angels, by contrast, are serving spirits, sent out to do service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation.

Show What You Know

  1. How do the prophets and the Son compare?

  2. Name three claims about the Son in verses 2 and 3.

  3. What is the purpose of the quotes in verses 5 to 14?

  4. What do angels do for those who will inherit salvation?
