Habakkuk 1:1 calls this the revelation which Habakkuk the prophet saw. Habakkuk was upset. He saw violence and fighting. The law was not working, and justice did not win.

Habakkuk cried out, Yahweh, how long will I cry? God answered. He told them to look among the nations and wonder. God said, I am working a work in your days. God would raise up the Chaldeans, a fierce nation.

Habakkuk was troubled again. He said God is from everlasting. God has purer eyes than to see evil. So why does God let cruel people win? Habakkuk brought his hard questions to God.

Honest Questions

Name Date

Read and Think

Habakkuk 1:1 calls this the revelation which Habakkuk the prophet saw. Unlike most prophets, Habakkuk mostly speaks to God rather than to the people. He opens with a complaint: Yahweh, how long will I cry, and you will not hear? He sees violence, strife, and a law that is paralyzed, so justice never prevails.

God answers in a surprising way. Look among the nations, watch, and wonder marvelously. God says he is raising up the Chaldeans, a bitter and hasty nation. Their horses are swifter than leopards. They laugh at every stronghold. Their strength is their god.

This answer gives Habakkuk a bigger question. He says, aren't you from everlasting, Yahweh my God, my Holy One? He says God's eyes are too pure to see evil, and he asks why God tolerates those who deal treacherously. Habakkuk pictures people being caught like fish in a net. He brings his honest struggle straight to God.

Bringing Complaints to God

Name Date

Read and Think

Habakkuk 1:1 calls this the revelation which Habakkuk the prophet saw. The book is shaped as a conversation between a prophet and God. In his first complaint, Habakkuk asks, Yahweh, how long will I cry, and you will not hear? He sees iniquity, destruction, and violence among his own people. Because the wicked surround the righteous, justice comes out perverted.

God's reply is startling: look among the nations, watch, and wonder marvelously; for I am working a work in your days which you will not believe. He is raising up the Chaldeans, a bitter and hasty nation, feared and dreaded, whose horses are swifter than leopards. They scoff at kings and laugh at every stronghold. Verse 11 sums them up: they are indeed guilty, whose strength is their god.

Habakkuk's second complaint grows from the answer. He affirms what he knows: God is from everlasting, the Holy One, the Rock, with purer eyes than to see evil. Yet he asks why God tolerates the treacherous when they swallow up those more righteous than themselves. He pictures the Chaldeans catching nations like fish in a dragnet and then worshiping the net that made them rich. Habakkuk does not walk away from God with his questions; he brings them to God.

Show What You Know

  1. What is Habakkuk's first complaint about?

  2. How does verse 11 describe the Chaldeans?

  3. What does Habakkuk affirm about God before his second question?

  4. What does the fisherman worship in verse 16?
