Habakkuk 1 · Grade 4
Honest Questions
Read and Think
Habakkuk 1:1 calls this the revelation which Habakkuk the prophet saw. Unlike most prophets, Habakkuk mostly speaks to God rather than to the people. He opens with a complaint: Yahweh, how long will I cry, and you will not hear? He sees violence, strife, and a law that is paralyzed, so justice never prevails.
God answers in a surprising way. Look among the nations, watch, and wonder marvelously. God says he is raising up the Chaldeans, a bitter and hasty nation. Their horses are swifter than leopards. They laugh at every stronghold. Their strength is their god.
This answer gives Habakkuk a bigger question. He says, aren't you from everlasting, Yahweh my God, my Holy One? He says God's eyes are too pure to see evil, and he asks why God tolerates those who deal treacherously. Habakkuk pictures people being caught like fish in a net. He brings his honest struggle straight to God.
