Genesis 9 · Grade 3

The Sign of the Covenant

Name Date

Read the Story

God blessed Noah and his sons and told them to be fruitful and fill the earth. Now people could eat animals as well as plants. God also taught that every human life is precious, because God made people in His own image.

God made a covenant with Noah, his descendants, and every living creature. He promised that never again would a flood destroy all life on the earth. The sign of this covenant was the rainbow. God said that when the rainbow is seen in the cloud, he will remember his covenant.

Noah planted a vineyard. One day he drank too much wine and lay uncovered in his tent. His son Ham saw him and told his brothers instead of helping. Shem and Japheth carefully covered their father without looking, showing him respect. Noah lived 350 years after the flood.

Memory Verse

I will establish my covenant with you: All flesh will not be cut off any more by the waters of the flood. There will never again be a flood to destroy the earth.”

Genesis 9 · Grade 4

God's Covenant with Every Creature

Name Date

Read and Think

After the flood God gave Noah's family a fresh start. He blessed them and told them, as He had told Adam, to be fruitful and fill the earth. God also protected human life: because people are made in the image of God, taking a human life is a serious crime against God Himself.

Then God made a covenant, a solemn, binding promise. He made it not only with Noah but with all his descendants and every living creature. Never again would a flood destroy the earth. God chose the rainbow as the sign. Remarkably, God said that when the rainbow appears, He will remember His covenant. The rainbow is a reminder of God's faithfulness.

The chapter ends with a sad story that shows sin was still present even after the flood. Noah became drunk, and his son Ham dishonored him. Shem and Japheth respected their father and covered him. Even righteous Noah was not perfect. The world still needed the promised Savior.

Genesis 9 · Grade 5

The Rainbow and the Image of God

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 9 is like a second beginning for the world. God repeats His blessing from creation: be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth. He now gives animals as food, but with limits, and He establishes the value of human life. Verse 6 explains why murder is so serious: God made people in His own image. Every person, of every age and nation, carries that dignity.

Next God makes a covenant with Noah, his descendants and every living creature. It is unconditional: God promises never again to destroy all life with a flood. The sign is the rainbow in the clouds. God says that when He sees it, He will remember the everlasting covenant. God binds Himself to His word, and creation itself displays the reminder.

The chapter closes honestly. Noah planted a vineyard, became drunk, and lay uncovered in his tent. Ham saw and told his brothers, dishonoring their father, while Shem and Japheth respectfully covered him. Noah then spoke words of blessing on Shem and Japheth and a curse on Canaan, Ham's son. The flood did not remove sin from the human heart. Only God's coming Savior could do that.

Show What You Know

  1. How does Genesis 9 echo Genesis 1?

  2. According to verse 6, why is murder so serious?

  3. What makes this covenant unconditional?

  4. What will God do when He sees the rainbow?

  5. What does the story of Noah's drunkenness teach about the human heart?
