The Dove and the Leaf

Name Date

Read the Story

God remembered Noah and all the animals in the ark. God sent a wind, and the water began to go down. The ark came to rest on a mountain.

Noah sent out a bird called a dove. The dove could not find a dry place, so it came back. A week later, Noah sent the dove again. This time it came back with a fresh olive leaf in its beak! The land was drying.

At last God told Noah to come out of the ark. Noah, his family and all the animals came out. Noah built an altar and thanked God. God promised that day and night, summer and winter, would keep coming.

God Remembered Noah

Name Date

Read the Story

The flood was very long, but God had not forgotten anyone in the ark. God remembered Noah and the animals, and He made a wind blow over the earth. The waters began to go down. The ark rested on the mountains of Ararat, and later the tops of other mountains could be seen.

Noah opened a window and sent out a raven, which flew back and forth. Then he sent out a dove, but it found no place to rest and returned. Seven days later he sent the dove again, and it returned with a freshly plucked olive leaf. Seven days after that, he sent the dove once more, and it did not come back.

When the ground was dry, God told Noah to come out with his family and the animals. Noah built an altar and offered sacrifices to the Lord. God promised that He would never again curse the ground or destroy every living thing as He had done, and that seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night would not cease.

Memory Verse

“God remembered Noah, all the animals, and all the livestock that were with him in the ship; and God made a wind to pass over the earth. The waters subsided.”

Genesis 8 · Grade 4

Waiting and Worship

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 8 begins with the words God remembered Noah. In the Bible, when God remembers someone, it means He acts on their behalf. God had never forgotten Noah. He sent a wind, closed up the springs of the deep, and stopped the rain. Slowly the waters went down, and the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Noah waited patiently. He sent out a raven and then a dove to see if the ground was dry. The dove's return with an olive leaf was a sign of new life. Even so, Noah did not leave the ark until God told him to. He waited for God's word.

When Noah came out, his first act was worship. He built an altar and offered sacrifices to the Lord. God was pleased, and He made a promise: as long as the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night will not cease. Every sunrise and every change of season is a reminder that God keeps His word.

Show What You Know

  1. What does it mean that God remembered Noah?

  2. What was the olive leaf a sign of?

  3. Why did Noah wait to leave the ark?

Genesis 8 · Grade 5

A New Beginning

Name Date

Read and Think

God remembered Noah. These words are the turning point of the flood account. To remember, in the Bible, is not just to recall something; it means to act faithfully on a covenant promise. God made a wind pass over the earth, stopped the fountains of the deep and the windows of heaven, and the waters steadily went down. On a specific day, the ark rested on the mountains of Ararat.

Noah used birds to test the land. The raven went back and forth. The dove found no rest at first, then returned with a fresh olive leaf, and finally did not return at all. Still, Noah removed the covering of the ark and waited until God spoke. Faith listens for God's direction instead of rushing ahead.

God told Noah to go out and to let the animals be fruitful and multiply, echoing Genesis 1. The world was getting a fresh start. Noah built an altar and offered burnt offerings from the clean animals. The Lord received the pleasing aroma and promised never again to curse the ground or destroy every living creature as He had done, even though the human heart is still inclined toward evil. Seasons, harvests, and day and night would continue as long as the earth remains.

Show What You Know

  1. What is the turning point of the flood account?

  2. Describe the three times Noah sent out the dove.

  3. How does God's command to be fruitful and multiply connect to Genesis 1?

  4. What did Noah do first after leaving the ark?

  5. What did God promise in verse 22?
