Jacob died, and Joseph was very sad. Joseph and his brothers took Jacob to Canaan and buried him in the family cave.
Then the brothers got scared. They worried that Joseph might pay them back for the bad things they did. They asked Joseph to forgive them.
Joseph cried. He told them not to be afraid. They meant to hurt him, but God meant it for good, to save many people. Joseph was kind to his brothers and took care of their children.

Joseph wept over his father and had him embalmed. The Egyptians mourned for Jacob seventy days. Pharaoh let Joseph go to bury his father, and a great company went with him: Pharaoh's officials, Joseph's household, his brothers, chariots and horsemen. They mourned seven days and buried Jacob in the cave of Machpelah.
When the brothers saw their father was dead, they worried that Joseph would hate them and pay them back. They sent a message asking for forgiveness and bowed before him: We are your servants. Joseph wept. He said, Don't be afraid, for am I in the place of God? As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to save many people alive, as is happening today. He promised to care for them and their little ones. He comforted them and spoke kindly to them.
Joseph lived 110 years and saw his great-grandchildren. Before he died he said, God will surely visit you, and bring you up out of this land to the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. He made the sons of Israel promise to carry his bones from Egypt. Joseph died and was placed in a coffin in Egypt.

When do you need to trust God to bring good from bad?
After Jacob died, Joseph's brothers were afraid he would finally get revenge. They had never fully believed they were forgiven. Joseph wept when they spoke to him (50:17).
Joseph's answer is one of the most important verses in Genesis: You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good. Joseph didn't pretend that what they did was not evil. But he trusted that God was in control and had used it to save many lives.
Joseph left vengeance to God and showed kindness. At the end of his life, he trusted God's promise to bring Israel to the promised land. His request about his bones showed his faith (Hebrews 11:22).

How can you see God's goodness in a hard situation?
Genesis closes with death and burial, yet it is full of hope. Jacob's grand funeral procession to Canaan, with Egypt's leaders mourning, shows how God had blessed the nations through Joseph. Burying Jacob at Machpelah again declares faith that Canaan belongs to Israel by God's promise.
The brothers' fear reveals how hard it can be to believe in forgiveness. Joseph's reply is a summary of the whole Joseph story and a key to understanding God's providence: As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to save many people alive, as is happening today. Both statements are true together. Human beings are responsible for their sins, and God is sovereign over them, able to accomplish His good purposes even through wrongdoing. In the New Testament, Acts 2:23 says Jesus was handed over by God's plan, though wicked hands crucified Him.
Joseph refuses to take God's place as judge, and instead he comforted them, and spoke kindly to them. Genesis begins with life in a garden and ends with a coffin in Egypt. Yet Joseph's final words look ahead: God will surely visit you. Hebrews 11:22 says by faith Joseph spoke of the exodus and gave instructions about his bones. Exodus 13:19 records Moses carrying them out, and Joshua 24:32 records their burial in Shechem. God's promises outlast every generation.
