Jacob told Judah that kings would come from his family. Many years later, King David came from Judah's family. The New Testament says Jesus came from Judah's family too!

Jacob said Joseph was like a fruitful vine. God the Shepherd had helped Joseph. After Jacob blessed his sons, he asked to be buried with Abraham and Isaac. Then Jacob died.

Genesis 49 · Grade 3

The Scepter of Judah

Name Date

Read the Story

Jacob called his sons: Assemble yourselves, and hear, you sons of Jacob. Reuben was the firstborn, but because of a serious sin against his father, he would not have first place. Simeon and Levi had acted with violence and cruel anger, so they would be scattered in Israel.

To Judah, Jacob said, Your brothers will praise you. He called Judah a lion's cub. The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs. The obedience of the peoples will be to him. Jacob also spoke about Zebulun, Issachar, Dan, Gad, Asher and Naphtali. In the middle, he prayed, I have waited for your salvation, Yahweh.

Jacob said, Joseph is a fruitful vine. Archers had attacked him, but his bow stayed strong because of the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob, the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel. Jacob blessed Benjamin too. Then Jacob told his sons to bury him in the cave of Machpelah with Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah and Leah. He drew his feet into the bed and died.

Memory Verse

“The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs. The obedience of the peoples will be to him.”

Genesis 49 · Grade 4

The Lion of Judah

Name Date

Read and Think

Jacob's last words to his sons were like prophecies. Some sons heard hard words. Reuben, Simeon and Levi learned that sin has consequences, even years later.

Judah received a royal promise. The scepter, a king's rod, would belong to Judah's family. King David came from Judah. In the New Testament, Jesus, the Son of David, is called the Lion of the tribe of Judah (Revelation 5:5). He is the one to whom the obedience of the peoples belongs.

Joseph's blessing praised God as the Shepherd and the Stone of Israel. Jacob died trusting God's promises, wanting to be buried in the land God promised.

  2. What is a scepter?

  3. What is Jesus called in Revelation 5:5?

Genesis 49 · Grade 5

Until Shiloh Comes

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 49 contains Jacob's final words, which he introduces as telling that which will happen to you in the days to come. These are prophetic blessings that shape the future of the twelve tribes. Reuben, the firstborn, loses preeminence because of his sin (35:22); Simeon and Levi are rebuked for their violent anger at Shechem (chapter 34). Sin's consequences can reach far into the future. Yet grace remains: Levi's descendants later become the priestly tribe after their faithfulness in Exodus 32.

Judah's blessing is the high point. Though he was the fourth son, Judah receives leadership: The scepter will not depart from Judah. (Some translations render this phrase as until Shiloh comes.) Christians have read this as a promise of the Messiah. Kings came from Judah through David. In the New Testament, Jesus is called the Lion of the tribe of Judah (Revelation 5:5). The images of a donkey and vine also point forward to the king who rides a donkey (Zechariah 9:9).

In the middle of the blessings, Jacob breaks into prayer: I have waited for your salvation, Yahweh. Joseph's blessing is full of names for God: the Mighty One of Jacob, the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel, God Almighty. Jacob dies giving instructions to be buried at Machpelah, the only land Abraham had owned in Canaan. His burial request is an act of faith in God's promise.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did Reuben lose his place as firstborn?

  2. What happened later to Levi's descendants?

  3. How have interpreters understood the scepter promise?

  4. What New Testament event have Christians connected with the donkey image?

  5. Why was Jacob's burial request an act of faith?

Think About It

  1. Simeon and Levi's sin had lasting results, yet God later showed grace to Levi's tribe. What does this teach about sin and grace?

  2. Jacob prayed, I have waited for your salvation. How do Christians wait for God's salvation today?

Memory Verse

“The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs. The obedience of the peoples will be to him.”
