Blessing the King

Name Date

Read the Story

Joseph presented five of his brothers to Pharaoh. They said they were shepherds and asked to live in Goshen. Pharaoh told Joseph to settle them in the best of the land. Then Joseph brought in his father. Jacob blessed Pharaoh. When Pharaoh asked his age, Jacob said his pilgrimage had been 130 years, few and hard.

The famine was very severe. Joseph gathered money for grain into Pharaoh's house. When the money ran out, the Egyptians gave their livestock for food. When that ran out, they sold their land. Joseph gave them seed to plant and said they should give a fifth of the harvest to Pharaoh. The people said, You have saved our lives!

Israel lived in Goshen. They gained possessions there, were fruitful, and multiplied greatly. Jacob lived seventeen years in Egypt. As his death drew near, he asked Joseph to promise not to bury him in Egypt but with his fathers. Joseph swore that he would.

A Pilgrim's Blessing

Name Date

Read and Think

It is amazing that Jacob, an old shepherd, blessed Pharaoh, the most powerful king in the world. Hebrews 7:7 says the lesser is blessed by the greater. Jacob carried God's covenant blessing, which was meant to reach all nations.

Jacob called his life a pilgrimage. He knew that he was traveling through this world, and his true home was with God. Even in Egypt's best land, he wanted to be buried in the land God had promised.

Joseph's wise plan kept a whole nation alive during the famine. God used Joseph to bless Egypt, just as He promised Abraham that all nations would be blessed through his family. Meanwhile, Israel was fruitful and multiplied in Goshen.

Genesis 47 · Grade 5

Strangers and Pilgrims

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 47 shows God's people settling in Egypt. Joseph's brothers present themselves honestly as shepherds, and Pharaoh grants them the best of the land. Then comes a striking scene: Jacob, a frail old man, blesses Pharaoh, both on entering and on leaving. The bearer of God's covenant blessing is spiritually greater than the king of Egypt (Hebrews 7:7).

Jacob's answer to Pharaoh's question is honest and humble: The years of my pilgrimage are one hundred thirty years. The days of the years of my life have been few and evil. Jacob had experienced much sorrow, much of it from his own choices. Yet he called it a pilgrimage, a journey toward a promised home. Hebrews 11:13 says the patriarchs confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

As the famine worsens, Joseph administers Egypt's food supply: first money, then livestock, then land and service are exchanged for grain. Pharaoh received a fifth of the harvest, and the people themselves say, You have saved our lives. Meanwhile Israel were fruitful, and multiplied exceedingly, fulfilling God's words in 46:3. The chapter ends with Jacob making Joseph swear to bury him in Canaan. Even in comfort, Jacob's hope was fixed on God's promise.

Show What You Know

  1. How did Jacob blessing Pharaoh show spiritual greatness?

  2. How did Jacob honestly describe his life?

  3. What does Hebrews 11:13 say the patriarchs confessed?

  4. How did the Egyptians view Joseph's plan?

  5. How did Israel's growth fulfill God's word?

Think About It

  1. Jacob was honest about his hard life but still trusted God. How can you be honest with God about hard things?

  2. Jacob's hope was fixed on God's promise even in comfort. How can comfort make it easy to forget God?

Memory Verse

Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The years of my pilgrimage are one hundred thirty years. The days of the years of my life have been few and evil. They have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.”
