Jacob packed up his whole family to go to Egypt. On the way, he stopped to worship God. That night God told Jacob not to be afraid to go to Egypt. God would go with him and make his family a great nation there.

Jacob's family was big. There were seventy people in Jacob's family in Egypt, counting Joseph and his sons.

God Goes with Jacob

Name Date

Read the Story

Israel traveled with all he had and came to Beersheba, where he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. God spoke to him in visions of the night: Jacob, Jacob. He answered, Here I am. God said, I am God, the God of your father. Don't be afraid to go down into Egypt, for there I will make of you a great nation. I will go down with you into Egypt. I will also surely bring you up again.

Jacob's sons carried their father, their little ones and their wives in the wagons Pharaoh had sent. They took their livestock and goods to Egypt. The chapter lists the names of Jacob's sons and grandsons. All the people of Jacob's household who came to Egypt were seventy.

Jacob sent Judah ahead to Joseph to show the way to Goshen. Joseph got his chariot ready and went to meet his father. He fell on his neck and wept a long time. Israel said, Now let me die, since I have seen your face, that you are still alive. Joseph told his brothers to tell Pharaoh they were shepherds, so they could live in Goshen.

Memory Verse

He said, “I am God, the God of your father. Don’t be afraid to go down into Egypt, for there I will make of you a great nation.

Genesis 46 · Grade 4

No Need to Fear

Name Date

Read and Think

Jacob was old, and moving to Egypt was a big change. Long before, God had told Isaac not to go to Egypt. So Jacob stopped at Beersheba to worship and seek God before leaving the promised land.

God answered with comfort: Don't be afraid. God promised to go with Jacob and to bring his family back one day. God had told Abraham that his descendants would live in a foreign land before returning (Genesis 15:13-14). This move was part of God's plan.

The list of seventy names reminds us that God knows every person in His family. The reunion of Joseph and Jacob after more than twenty years was full of joy. God had kept Jacob's son alive and brought them together again.

  1. Why did Jacob stop to worship before going to Egypt?

  2. What earlier promise to Abraham did this move fulfill?

Genesis 46 · Grade 5

Into Egypt with God

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 46 marks a major turning point: the family of promise leaves Canaan for Egypt. Jacob pauses at Beersheba, the place where Abraham and Isaac had called on the Lord, and offers sacrifices. His hesitation is understandable; Isaac had been forbidden to go to Egypt (26:2). God's final recorded word to Jacob addresses that fear: Don't be afraid to go down into Egypt.

God's promise contains three parts: I will make of you a great nation there; I will go down with you; and I will also surely bring you up again. These promises shape the book of Exodus. In Egypt, Israel will grow from a family into a nation, and God will bring them out in power. This fulfills God's word to Abraham in Genesis 15:13-16.

The genealogy lists the seventy persons of Jacob's household, a number of completeness. Stephen later cites seventy-five (Acts 7:14), following the Greek Old Testament, which counted additional descendants of Joseph. The reunion of Jacob and Joseph is tender: Joseph weeps a good while on his father's neck. Joseph then wisely positions his family in Goshen as shepherds, which kept them somewhat separate from Egyptian society and helped preserve their identity as God's people.

Show What You Know

  1. Why might Jacob have hesitated to go to Egypt?

  2. What are the three parts of God's promise?

  3. How does this chapter connect to Exodus?

  4. Why does Acts 7:14 say seventy-five?

  5. Why was living in Goshen as shepherds helpful?
