His brothers were scared. But Joseph told them to come close and not be upset, because God sent him there to save lives. Joseph hugged Benjamin and cried. He kissed all his brothers.

Joseph told them to go get their father and come live near him in Egypt. The brothers went home and told Jacob that Joseph was alive! At first Jacob could not believe it. Then he said, I will go and see him before I die.

God Sent Joseph Ahead

Name Date

Read the Story

Joseph could not control himself any longer. He sent out all his servants and wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard. He said, I am Joseph! Does my father still live? His brothers were too troubled to answer.

Joseph said, Come near to me, please. Then he said, I am Joseph, your brother, whom you sold into Egypt. He went on, Now don't be grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life. He explained that five more years of famine were coming. So now it wasn't you who sent me here, but God. He told them to bring their father and live in the land of Goshen.

Joseph hugged Benjamin and wept, and kissed all his brothers. Pharaoh was pleased and sent wagons and good things for the journey. Joseph told his brothers, See that you don't quarrel on the way. When they told Jacob that Joseph was alive and ruler over Egypt, his heart grew numb. But when he saw the wagons, his spirit revived. Israel said, It is enough. Joseph my son is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.

Memory Verse

“God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on the earth, and to save you alive by a great deliverance.”

Forgiveness and God's Plan

Name Date

Read and Think

Joseph had every reason to take revenge. He was powerful, and his brothers were helpless before him. Instead, he wept, hugged them and forgave them. Forgiveness means choosing not to pay someone back for the wrong they did.

Joseph did not pretend their sin was nothing. He said plainly, You sold me. But he saw God's bigger plan: God sent me before you to preserve life. Joseph understood that God had been in control the whole time.

Joseph even warned them, Don't quarrel on the way! He knew they might start blaming each other. Joseph wanted peace in the family. In the New Testament, Ephesians 4:32 tells us to be kind and tenderhearted, forgiving each other as God in Christ forgave us.

Genesis 45 · Grade 5

God Meant It for Good

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 45 is the emotional summit of the Joseph story. Judah's self-sacrificing plea has shown that the brothers are changed men. Joseph can no longer restrain himself. Clearing the room, he weeps loudly and reveals himself: I am Joseph! Does my father still live? The brothers are dismayed, literally terrified, for the brother they wronged now holds their lives in his hand.

Joseph's words are a masterpiece of grace and theology. He names their sin honestly (whom you sold into Egypt) but immediately comforts them and points to God's providence three times: God sent me before you to preserve life. He repeated, God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on the earth. He concluded, So now it wasn't you who sent me here, but God. Joseph holds together human responsibility and divine sovereignty. Their sin was real, but God's purpose was greater. This anticipates Genesis 50:20 and Acts 2:23, where the crucifixion is both a wicked human act and God's definite plan.

Joseph embraces Benjamin, then kisses all his brothers, After that his brothers talked with him: the silence of hatred from Genesis 37:4 is broken. Pharaoh generously invites the family to Egypt. Joseph's warning, Don't quarrel on the way, is wise pastoral care. Jacob, numb with disbelief, revives at the sight of the wagons. The family that seemed shattered beyond repair is restored by God's grace.

Show What You Know

  1. Why could Joseph reveal himself now?

  2. How many times does Joseph say God sent him, and why is this significant?

  3. What two truths does Joseph hold together?

  4. What earlier verse is reversed when his brothers talked with him?

  5. How does Acts 2:23 parallel Joseph's view?
