The Silver Cup

Name Date

Read the Story

Joseph gave his brothers one more test. He told his servant to hide his silver cup in Benjamin's sack of grain. The brothers left for home.

Joseph's servant chased them. He said someone had taken his master's cup. They opened every sack. The cup was in Benjamin's sack! The brothers were very upset. They all went back to Joseph together.

Joseph said Benjamin must stay and be his servant, and the rest could go. But Judah asked to stay instead, so Benjamin could go home to their father. Judah loved his father and his brother.

Memory Verse

“Now therefore, please let your servant stay instead of the boy, my lord’s slave; and let the boy go up with his brothers.”

Judah Offers to Stay

Name Date

Read the Story

Joseph told his steward to fill the men's sacks with food, put each man's money back, and put Joseph's silver cup in the youngest brother's sack. In the morning the brothers left. Soon the steward caught up with them and accused them of stealing the cup.

The brothers said that whoever had it would die, and they would be slaves. The steward searched from the oldest to the youngest, and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack. The brothers tore their clothes, loaded their donkeys, and all returned to the city. They fell on the ground before Joseph.

Judah said, God has found out the iniquity of your servants. Joseph said only the one with the cup would be his slave. Then Judah came near and told the whole story: their father loved Benjamin, and if the boy did not return, their father would die of sorrow. Judah said, Please let your servant stay instead of the boy, my lord's slave; and let the boy go up with his brothers.

A Heart Transformed

Name Date

Read and Think

Joseph's final test was designed to show whether his brothers had changed. He made it look like Benjamin was guilty, and he offered to let the rest of them go free. This was exactly the situation they had faced with Joseph years earlier. They could abandon Rachel's son and go home.

But they did not. They tore their clothes and all went back. Judah confessed, God has found out the iniquity of your servants, thinking about what they had done long ago.

Judah's speech is one of the most moving in Genesis. He spoke of his father's love for Benjamin and offered himself as a slave in Benjamin's place. The brother who once sold Joseph was now willing to give up his freedom for another brother. True repentance shows itself in changed actions.

Show What You Know

  1. Why was Joseph's test like the situation years earlier?

  2. How did the brothers show they had changed?

  3. What did Judah confess?

  4. What shows true repentance?

Think About It

  1. Judah's actions showed he had changed. What does real change look like in someone's life?

  2. Judah offered to take Benjamin's punishment. How does that remind you of Jesus?

Memory Verse

Genesis 44 · Grade 5

The Substitute

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 44 is the climax of Joseph's testing. He arranges for his divining cup to be placed in Benjamin's sack, then sends his steward to accuse the brothers. Confident of their innocence, the brothers rashly offer death for the guilty one and slavery for the rest. The search proceeds from oldest to youngest, building suspense, until the cup appears in Benjamin's sack.

The brothers' response reveals their transformation. Twenty years earlier they tore Joseph's robe and sent their father a lie. Now they tear their own clothes in grief and return together. Judah, now the clear leader, confesses before Joseph, God has found out the iniquity of your servants. He is not admitting to stealing the cup; he is acknowledging the old sin against Joseph. Joseph offers them freedom if they leave Benjamin behind. This is the decisive test.

Judah's intercession (verses 18-34) is the longest speech in Genesis. He speaks with respect, recounts the story honestly, and even accepts that his father loves Rachel's sons more without bitterness. Then he offers himself: Let your servant stay instead of the boy. The man who once said, Let's sell him, now offers to take Benjamin's place. Judah becomes a substitute for his brother. In the New Testament, Jesus, from Judah's line, is called the Lion of the tribe of Judah (Revelation 5:5), who gave Himself as the perfect substitute for sinners.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did the search go from oldest to youngest?

  2. How is the brothers' tearing of clothes a contrast with their past?

  3. What sin was Judah really confessing?

  4. How did Judah show he had overcome bitterness about favoritism?

  5. How have Christians seen Judah as a picture of Jesus?

Think About It

  1. Judah offered to take Benjamin's place. What does it mean to you that Jesus took your place?

  2. How can you put someone else's good ahead of your own this week?

Memory Verse

“Now therefore, please let your servant stay instead of the boy, my lord’s slave; and let the boy go up with his brothers.”
