Genesis 44 · Grade 5
The Substitute
Read and Think
Genesis 44 is the climax of Joseph's testing. He arranges for his divining cup to be placed in Benjamin's sack, then sends his steward to accuse the brothers. Confident of their innocence, the brothers rashly offer death for the guilty one and slavery for the rest. The search proceeds from oldest to youngest, building suspense, until the cup appears in Benjamin's sack.
The brothers' response reveals their transformation. Twenty years earlier they tore Joseph's robe and sent their father a lie. Now they tear their own clothes in grief and return together. Judah, now the clear leader, confesses before Joseph, God has found out the iniquity of your servants. He is not admitting to stealing the cup; he is acknowledging the old sin against Joseph. Joseph offers them freedom if they leave Benjamin behind. This is the decisive test.
Judah's intercession (verses 18-34) is the longest speech in Genesis. He speaks with respect, recounts the story honestly, and even accepts that his father loves Rachel's sons more without bitterness. Then he offers himself: Let your servant stay instead of the boy. The man who once said, Let's sell him, now offers to take Benjamin's place. Judah becomes a substitute for his brother. In the New Testament, Jesus, from Judah's line, is called the Lion of the tribe of Judah (Revelation 5:5), who gave Himself as the perfect substitute for sinners.
