In Egypt, Joseph saw Benjamin, his little brother. Joseph's heart was full of love. He went into another room and cried. Then he washed his face and came back.

Joseph had a big feast for his brothers. He gave Benjamin five times as much food as the others! The brothers ate and enjoyed themselves. They still did not know the ruler was Joseph.

May God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may release to you your other brother and Benjamin. If I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.”

Judah Takes Responsibility

Name Date

Read the Story

The famine was severe. When the grain was gone, Jacob told his sons to go buy more. Judah reminded him that the man would not see them without Benjamin. Judah said, Send the boy with me. He promised to be responsible for him and to bear the blame forever if he did not bring him back.

Jacob finally agreed. He sent gifts, double the money, and Benjamin. Jacob prayed, May God Almighty give you mercy before the man. In Egypt, Joseph's steward brought them to Joseph's house. The brothers were afraid, but the steward said, Peace be to you. Don't be afraid. Your God, and the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks. He brought Simeon out to them.

When Joseph saw Benjamin, he asked, Is this your youngest brother? and blessed him. Joseph was deeply moved and went to his room to weep. He washed his face, controlled himself, and said, Serve the meal. The brothers were seated in order of their ages, and they were amazed. Benjamin's portion was five times larger than the others'.

Genesis 43 · Grade 4

A Changed Brother

Name Date

Read and Think

Years before, Judah had suggested selling Joseph. Now he stepped forward to protect Benjamin. He offered to take the blame himself if anything went wrong. God was changing Judah's heart.

Jacob also had to let go. He had held tightly to Benjamin, but now he had to trust God Almighty. Sometimes faith means placing what we love most in God's hands.

Joseph's tears show his tender love. The feast was a test too. Would the brothers be jealous when Benjamin received five times more? This time, they enjoyed the meal together. The old jealousy seemed to be fading.

Genesis 43 · Grade 5

A Pledge and a Feast

Name Date

Read and Think

As the famine deepens, the brothers face an impossible choice: starve, or bring Benjamin to Egypt. Reuben's earlier offer (42:37) had been rash. Now Judah offers something better: I'll be collateral for him. From my hand will you require him. Judah, who once sold a brother for silver, now offers himself as surety for a brother. This prepares for his greater act of self-sacrifice in Genesis 44.

Jacob relents with a prayer of surrender: May God Almighty give you mercy before the man. He added, If I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved. He sends gifts and double money, seeking to make things right. At Joseph's house the brothers expect punishment, but instead they hear words of peace: Peace be to you. Don't be afraid. Your God, and the God of your father, has given you treasure. Grace surprises them.

Joseph's composure breaks when he sees his mother's son Benjamin, and he weeps in private. At the meal the brothers are seated in birth order, to their astonishment, and Benjamin receives five portions. Joseph is testing whether envy of a favored son still rules them. This time they drank, and were merry with him. The scene anticipates the gospel feast: a hidden lord who knows his brothers fully, receives them graciously, and prepares a table before them (Psalm 23:5).
