Genesis 43 · Grade 3
Judah Takes Responsibility
Read the Story
The famine was severe. When the grain was gone, Jacob told his sons to go buy more. Judah reminded him that the man would not see them without Benjamin. Judah said, Send the boy with me. He promised to be responsible for him and to bear the blame forever if he did not bring him back.
Jacob finally agreed. He sent gifts, double the money, and Benjamin. Jacob prayed, May God Almighty give you mercy before the man. In Egypt, Joseph's steward brought them to Joseph's house. The brothers were afraid, but the steward said, Peace be to you. Don't be afraid. Your God, and the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks. He brought Simeon out to them.
When Joseph saw Benjamin, he asked, Is this your youngest brother? and blessed him. Joseph was deeply moved and went to his room to weep. He washed his face, controlled himself, and said, Serve the meal. The brothers were seated in order of their ages, and they were amazed. Benjamin's portion was five times larger than the others'.
