From Prison to Palace

Name Date

Read the Story

Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, had two strange dreams. Seven skinny cows ate seven fat cows. Then seven thin heads of grain swallowed seven full heads of grain. No one could tell him what the dreams meant.

The cupbearer remembered Joseph! Pharaoh sent for him. Joseph said he could not do it, but God would give the answer. God showed Joseph that there would be seven years with lots of food, and then seven years with no food.

Pharaoh said, Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom is the Spirit of God? He made Joseph a ruler over all of Egypt. Joseph saved lots of grain during the good years. When the hungry years came, there was food for everyone.

Memory Verse

Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, “It isn’t in me. God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.”

Seven Years of Plenty

Name Date

Read the Story

Two full years later, Pharaoh dreamed of seven fat cows eaten by seven thin cows, and then seven full heads of grain swallowed by seven thin ones. None of his wise men could interpret the dreams. The chief cupbearer remembered Joseph, and Joseph was brought quickly from the prison.

Joseph said, It isn't in me. God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace. He explained that both dreams meant the same thing: seven years of great plenty, then seven years of severe famine. God had shown Pharaoh what He was about to do. Joseph advised Pharaoh to choose a wise man to store a fifth of the harvest during the good years.

Pharaoh said, Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom is the Spirit of God? He set Joseph over all Egypt and gave him his signet ring and fine clothes. Joseph was thirty years old. He gathered grain like the sand of the sea. He had two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. When the famine came, all the world came to Egypt to buy grain from Joseph.

Memory Verse

Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, “It isn’t in me. God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.”

God's Perfect Timing

Name Date

Read and Think

Joseph waited two long years after the cupbearer forgot him. Then, in one day, he went from prisoner to ruler of Egypt. God's timing was perfect. If Joseph had been released earlier, he might not have been there when Pharaoh needed him.

Joseph gave all the credit to God. He did not say he was smart. He said, It isn't in me. Even Pharaoh, who did not worship the true God, could see God's Spirit in Joseph.

Joseph named his sons to show his faith. Manasseh means making to forget, because God had helped him forget his troubles. Ephraim means fruitful, because God had made him fruitful in the land of his suffering. God had turned Joseph's sorrow into blessing.

Genesis 41 · Grade 5

Fruitful in the Land of Affliction

Name Date

Read and Think

After two more years, God moves. Pharaoh's twin dreams baffle Egypt's magicians and wise men. The cupbearer finally remembers Joseph, who is shaved, changed and rushed before the king. Joseph's first words are humble and God-centered: It isn't in me. God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace. Throughout his interpretation, Joseph repeatedly names God as the one who is acting: What God is about to do he has declared to Pharaoh. The doubling of the dream means the matter is fixed by God and will happen soon.

Joseph then offers wise counsel: appoint a discerning man, collect a fifth of the produce during the years of plenty, and store it for the famine. Pharaoh recognizes a man in whom is the Spirit of God and sets Joseph over all Egypt. The signet ring, fine linen, gold chain and second chariot fulfill, in a surprising way, the dreams of Genesis 37. At thirty, thirteen years after being sold, Joseph is exalted.

Joseph names his sons Manasseh (God has made me forget all my toil) and Ephraim (God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction). He does not deny his suffering; he testifies to God's grace within it. When the famine spreads, All countries came into Egypt, to Joseph, to buy grain. Through Abraham's descendant, the nations are being blessed. Christians have read this as a picture of Christ, who humbled Himself and was highly exalted (Philippians 2:8-9).

Show What You Know

  1. What did Joseph's first words to Pharaoh reveal about him?

  2. Why was the dream given twice?

  3. How long was Joseph a slave and prisoner before being exalted?

  4. How do Joseph's sons' names show faith?

  5. How have Christians seen Joseph as a picture of Jesus?
