Genesis 40 · Grade 2

The Cupbearer and the Baker

Name Date

Read the Story

Joseph was in prison. Two of Pharaoh's servants were in prison too: the cupbearer, who served the king's drinks, and the baker, who made the king's food.

One night, both men had strange dreams. They were sad because nobody could tell them what the dreams meant. Joseph said that God knows what dreams mean, and asked them to tell him. God helped Joseph understand both dreams.

Joseph told the cupbearer that in three days he would get his job back. Joseph asked him to remember him and tell Pharaoh about him. Three days later, the cupbearer did get his job back. But he forgot all about Joseph.

Memory Verse

They said to him, “We have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it.” Joseph said to them, “Don’t interpretations belong to God? Please tell it to me.”

Genesis 40 · Grade 3

Forgotten in Prison

Name Date

Read the Story

Pharaoh's chief cupbearer and chief baker offended their master, and Pharaoh put them in the prison where Joseph was. The captain of the guard put Joseph in charge of them. One night, each man had a dream. In the morning Joseph saw they were sad. He asked, Why do you look so sad today?

They said no one could interpret their dreams. Joseph said, Don't interpretations belong to God? Please tell it to me. The cupbearer dreamed of a vine with three branches; he squeezed the grapes into Pharaoh's cup. Joseph said, Within three more days, Pharaoh will lift up your head, and restore you to your office. Joseph asked him to remember him and mention him to Pharaoh, because he had done nothing to deserve prison.

The baker dreamed of three baskets of bread on his head, with birds eating from the top basket. Joseph sadly told him that in three days Pharaoh would take his life. On the third day, Pharaoh's birthday, it all happened as Joseph said. Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.

Memory Verse

They said to him, “We have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it.” Joseph said to them, “Don’t interpretations belong to God? Please tell it to me.”

Genesis 40 · Grade 4

Waiting on God

Name Date

Read and Think

Joseph could have been bitter in prison, but instead he noticed the sad faces of two fellow prisoners and asked about them. Even in his own trouble, Joseph cared about others.

Joseph pointed to God, saying interpretations belong to Him. Joseph did not take credit for his gift. He gave honest answers, even when the news for the baker was hard to give.

Joseph asked the cupbearer to remember him, but the cupbearer forgot. Joseph waited two more full years in prison (Genesis 41:1). People may forget us, but God never does. Isaiah 49:15-16 says God has engraved His people on the palms of His hands.

Show What You Know

  1. How did Joseph show care for others in prison?

  2. Who did Joseph give credit to for interpreting dreams?

  3. How long did Joseph wait after the cupbearer forgot him?

  4. What does Isaiah 49 say God has done for His people?

Think About It

  1. Who is someone around you who looks sad? How can you show them care?

  2. How does it feel to be forgotten? What comfort does God's promise to remember you bring?

Memory Verse

They said to him, “We have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it.” Joseph said to them, “Don’t interpretations belong to God? Please tell it to me.”

Genesis 40 · Grade 5

Interpretations Belong to God

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 40 continues Joseph's season in prison. Two high officials of Pharaoh, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker, are placed under Joseph's care. The cupbearer was a trusted official who tasted the king's wine; the baker prepared his food. Joseph, though a prisoner himself, serves them faithfully and notices their troubled faces, a quiet sign of his compassion.

When they lament that no one can interpret their dreams, Joseph says, Don't interpretations belong to God? Joseph consistently points away from himself to God (see also 41:16). The cupbearer's dream of a budding vine and Pharaoh's cup signals restoration in three days. The baker's dream of baskets with birds eating from them signals death in three days. Joseph speaks the hard truth honestly.

Joseph then makes a plea: he was stolen away from his land and has done nothing to deserve prison. Everything happens exactly as Joseph said, confirming that God's word through him is true. But the chapter ends painfully: Yet the chief cup bearer didn't remember Joseph, but forgot him. Joseph will wait two more years. God's timing would bring Joseph before Pharaoh at exactly the right moment. Psalm 105:19 says that God's word tested Joseph until the time came for what he said to happen.

Show What You Know

  1. What does Joseph's attention to the men's faces show?

  2. How does Joseph point away from himself?

  3. Why was Joseph's message to the baker hard?

  4. What confirmed that God's word through Joseph was true?

  5. What does Psalm 105:19 say about Joseph's waiting?

Think About It

  1. Joseph was honest even when the truth was hard. How can you speak truth with kindness?

  2. Why might God allow a season of waiting? What can grow in us while we wait?

Memory Verse

They said to him, “We have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it.” Joseph said to them, “Don’t interpretations belong to God? Please tell it to me.”
