One day both brothers brought gifts to God. Abel brought the best of his sheep. God was pleased with Abel and his gift. God was not pleased with Cain's gift, and Cain became very angry.

God warned Cain to do what is right and not let sin win. But Cain did not listen. He hurt his brother, and Abel died. God punished Cain, but God still kept him safe. Later God gave Adam and Eve another son named Seth.

Genesis 4 · Grade 3

Sin Is Crouching at the Door

Name Date

Read the Story

Cain, the older son, worked the ground. Abel, the younger son, kept sheep. In time both brought offerings to the Lord. Cain brought some of his crops. Abel brought the firstborn of his flock and their best parts. God accepted Abel and his offering, but He did not accept Cain and his offering.

Cain became angry, and his face showed it. God spoke to him kindly and warned him: if you do well, you will be accepted. But sin is waiting at the door, and it wants to control you. You must rule over it.

Cain did not listen. He attacked his brother in the field, and Abel died. When God asked, Where is Abel? Cain answered, Am I my brother's keeper? God sent Cain away to wander, but He put a mark on Cain so no one would kill him. God then gave Adam and Eve a son named Seth, and people began to call on the name of the Lord.

Memory Verse

If you do well, won’t it be lifted up? If you don’t do well, sin crouches at the door. Its desire is for you, but you are to rule over it.”

Genesis 4 · Grade 4

Master Your Anger

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 4 shows how quickly sin spread after Adam and Eve left Eden. Their sons Cain and Abel both brought offerings to God. Abel gave the firstborn of his flock, the best he had. The New Testament says Abel offered his gift by faith (Hebrews 11:4). God looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but not on Cain and his.

Cain grew very angry. God came to him and asked, Why are you angry? God gave Cain a chance to turn around. He warned that sin was like an animal crouching at the door, ready to pounce, but Cain could master it. Cain refused to listen. He killed his brother Abel in the field.

God confronted Cain and judged him: he would be a restless wanderer. Yet God still showed mercy, placing a mark on Cain so that others would not kill him. The chapter ends with hope. God gave Adam and Eve another son, Seth, and people began to call on the name of the Lord.

Genesis 4 · Grade 5

Sin at the Door, Grace in the Story

Name Date

Read and Think

After the fall, sin did not stay small. In Genesis 4, Cain and Abel bring offerings to the Lord. Abel brings the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions, his very best. Hebrews 11:4 explains that Abel offered his sacrifice by faith. God accepts Abel and his offering but not Cain and his. The issue was not only the gift but the heart of the giver.

God sees Cain's anger and speaks to him personally. He offers acceptance if Cain does well, and He warns that sin is crouching at the door, desiring to have him, but he must rule over it. Cain ignores God's warning and murders Abel. When God asks where Abel is, Cain lies and asks, Am I my brother's keeper?

God's judgment is serious: Cain becomes a wanderer, and the ground will no longer yield its strength to him. Yet God hears Cain's complaint and puts a mark on him so no one will kill him. Cain's family line builds cities and makes tools and music, but also grows proud and violent. The chapter closes with Seth, a son God gave in place of Abel, and with people calling on the name of the Lord. God keeps His promise alive.

Show What You Know

  1. What does Hebrews 11:4 add to our understanding of Abel's offering?

  2. What does God's warning about sin crouching at the door teach?

  3. How did Cain respond to God's question about Abel?

  4. How did God show both justice and mercy to Cain?

  5. Why is the birth of Seth important?
