Judah Admits He Was Wrong

Name Date

Read the Story

While Joseph was in Egypt, his brother Judah lived in Canaan. Judah made a promise to a woman named Tamar, but he did not keep it. That was wrong.

Later, Tamar showed Judah that he had done wrong. Judah said, She is more righteous than I. Judah admitted his sin. Admitting you were wrong is an important step.

Tamar had twin boys named Perez and Zerah. Many years later, King David was born in Perez's family. The New Testament says Jesus was born in that same family line!

A Broken Promise

Name Date

Read the Story

Judah left his brothers and married a Canaanite woman. They had three sons: Er, Onan and Shelah. Judah's son Er married Tamar. Er was wicked, and the Lord took his life. Judah told Onan to give Tamar a son for his brother's family line, but he refused, and the Lord took his life too.

Judah told Tamar to wait until Shelah grew up. But Judah never kept his promise. Tamar disguised herself and arranged things so that Judah would have to face what he had done. She kept his seal, cord and staff as proof.

When Judah learned that Tamar was expecting a child, he was ready to punish her harshly. Then she showed him his seal, cord and staff. Judah recognized them and said, She is more righteous than I, because I didn't give her to Shelah, my son. Tamar had twin sons, Perez and Zerah.

Judah Begins to Change

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 38 interrupts Joseph's story to show us Judah. Judah had suggested selling Joseph. Now he moved away from his family and married a Canaanite. His sons were wicked, and Judah failed to keep his word to Tamar, a widow who had no one to protect her.

Tamar took a bold and troubling step to make Judah face his wrong. The Bible does not call her actions good, but it does show that Judah had treated her unjustly. When the truth came out, Judah humbly confessed, She is more righteous than I. This is the first sign of change in Judah.

Later Judah offered to be a slave in Benjamin's place (Genesis 44:33). God was changing his heart. Tamar's son Perez became an ancestor of King David. In the New Testament, he is listed among Jesus' ancestors. In the New Testament, Matthew 1:3 names Tamar in Jesus' family tree.

Genesis 38 · Grade 5

Grace in an Unlikely Family Line

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 38 is placed between Joseph's sale and his story in Egypt, and the contrast is intentional. Joseph will resist temptation in a foreign land; Judah, in the promised land, drifts away from his brothers, marries a Canaanite, and lives carelessly. His sons Er and Onan are wicked in the Lord's sight, and the Lord takes their lives. Judah then withholds his youngest son, Shelah, from Tamar, leaving her as a widow without a future, contrary to the custom intended to protect widows and preserve a family line.

Tamar's response is a deeply troubling act of deception, which Scripture records without approving. Through it, she exposes Judah's hypocrisy: he is ready to condemn her, yet he is guilty. When she produces his seal, cord and staff, Judah confesses, She is more righteous than I. This confession is a turning point. The man who sold his brother and deceived his father begins to change; by Genesis 44 he will offer his own life for Benjamin.

Tamar bears twins, and in a struggle at birth reminiscent of Jacob and Esau, Perez comes first. Perez becomes the ancestor of Boaz and King David (Ruth 4:18-22). In the New Testament, Matthew 1:3 includes Tamar in the genealogy of Jesus, along with Rahab, Ruth and Bathsheba. God did not choose this family because of human goodness. He worked through sinful people to bring the Savior who would redeem sinners.

Show What You Know

  1. How does Genesis 38 contrast with Joseph's story?

  2. How did Judah wrong Tamar?

  3. Does Scripture approve of Tamar's actions? What does it emphasize instead?

  4. How does Judah's confession begin a change seen later?

  5. Why is Tamar's place in Matthew 1 significant?
