Jacob loved his son Joseph very much. He gave Joseph a beautiful coat. Joseph's brothers were jealous. They were not kind to him.

Joseph had dreams. In one dream, his brothers' bundles of grain bowed down to his bundle. When he told them, they were even more angry.

One day Joseph went to find his brothers in the fields. They threw him into an empty pit. Then they sold him to traders going to Egypt. They told their father that Joseph was gone. Jacob was very sad. But God was still with Joseph.

Sold into Slavery

Name Date

Read the Story

Joseph was seventeen and helped his brothers care for the flocks. Israel loved Joseph more than his other sons, because he was born in his old age, and made him a special coat. His brothers hated him and could not speak kindly to him.

Joseph dreamed that his brothers' sheaves of grain bowed to his sheaf. He dreamed again that the sun, moon and eleven stars bowed to him. His brothers envied him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

Jacob sent Joseph to check on his brothers near Shechem. They saw him coming and said, Behold, this dreamer comes. They plotted to kill him, but Reuben said, Let's not take his life, and they threw him into an empty pit. Judah said, What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? Come, and let's sell him. They sold Joseph for twenty pieces of silver to traders going to Egypt. They dipped his coat in goat's blood, and Jacob believed a wild animal had killed Joseph. Jacob mourned many days. In Egypt Joseph was sold to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh.

Memory Verse

“His brothers envied him, but his father kept this saying in mind.”

Genesis 37 · Grade 4

Jealousy Grows

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 37 begins the story of Joseph, which fills most of the rest of Genesis. Jacob's favoritism toward Joseph was unwise. He gave Joseph a special coat, a sign of honor. This made the brothers bitter.

Joseph's dreams were from God, but sharing them with his angry brothers made things worse. Jealousy grew into hatred, and hatred grew into a plan to kill. 1 John 3:15 warns that hating a brother is like murder in the heart.

Reuben and Judah stopped the murder, but the brothers still sold Joseph and deceived their father, just as Jacob once deceived his father with goatskins and his brother's clothes. Joseph's future looked hopeless. Yet God was at work in ways no one could see.

Show What You Know

  1. What was unwise about Jacob's actions?

  2. How did the brothers' sin grow step by step?

  3. What does 1 John 3:15 say about hatred?

  4. How did the brothers' deception echo Jacob's own past?

Genesis 37 · Grade 5

The Dreamer

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 37 opens the final major section of Genesis: This is the history of the generations of Jacob. Joseph, seventeen, brings a bad report about his brothers, and Israel openly favors him with a special robe. The family that already suffered from Jacob's preference for Rachel now passes that wound to the next generation. The brothers hated him, and couldn't speak peaceably to him.

Joseph's two dreams, of sheaves bowing and of the sun, moon and eleven stars bowing, are God's revelation of the future, and they will be fulfilled in Egypt. But Joseph's youthful sharing of them fuels his brothers' envy. Even Jacob rebukes him, though he kept this saying in mind. Envy, Scripture warns, rots the bones (Proverbs 14:30).

At Dothan the brothers' envy becomes violence. They plan murder; Reuben intervenes, hoping to rescue Joseph later; Judah proposes selling him instead, for profit. They sell their brother for twenty shekels of silver and deceive their father with a goat's blood and the robe, an ironic echo of Jacob's own deception of Isaac. Jacob refuses comfort. Yet the chapter ends with a quiet note of hope: Joseph is in Egypt, in the house of Potiphar. Later Joseph will say, You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good (Genesis 50:20).

Show What You Know

  1. How did Jacob's favoritism pass a wound to the next generation?

  2. Were Joseph's dreams from God? How do we know?

  3. What different roles did Reuben and Judah play?

  4. What is ironic about the brothers' deception of Jacob?

  5. How does Genesis 50:20 help us read this chapter?
