Genesis 36 · Grade 3

The Nation of Edom

Name Date

Read the Story

Genesis 36 tells the history of Esau's family. Esau married women from Canaan. He had many sons. He took his family and his animals and moved away from Jacob. They were too rich to live together. Esau lived in the hill country of Seir.

The chapter lists Esau's sons and grandsons. One grandson was Amalek, whose people later fought against Israel. It also lists the chiefs of Edom. It names the people who lived in Seir before them.

Then it lists the kings of Edom. They ruled before Israel had a king. God had said two nations would come from Rebekah's twins. Esau's family became Edom. Jacob's family would become Israel.

Memory Verse

“For their substance was too great for them to dwell together, and the land of their travels couldn’t bear them because of their livestock.”

Genesis 36:7 (WEB)

Genesis 36 · Grade 4

God Keeps Every Promise

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 36 might seem like a list of hard names, but it teaches something important. God had promised Rebekah that two nations would come from her twins. This chapter shows that promise coming true for Esau.

Esau's family grew quickly and had kings early. Meanwhile, Jacob's family would wait many years in Egypt before becoming a nation. Sometimes God's people wait longer, but God's timing is best.

The Edomites were relatives of Israel, but they often opposed Israel later. Still, God later told Israel not to hate an Edomite, because he was their brother (Deuteronomy 23:7). God's Word teaches care even for difficult relatives.

Show What You Know

  1. What promise does this chapter show coming true?

  2. How did Edom's growth compare to Israel's?

  3. How were the Edomites related to Israel?

  4. What did God tell Israel about Edomites in Deuteronomy 23:7?

Think About It

  1. Why might God include long lists of names in the Bible?

  2. How can you show kindness to a relative who is hard to get along with?

Memory Verse

“For their substance was too great for them to dwell together, and the land of their travels couldn’t bear them because of their livestock.”

Genesis 36 · Grade 5

The Generations of Esau

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 36 is the generations (toledot) of Esau, one of the structural markers of Genesis. Before the story turns fully to Jacob's sons, Genesis closes Esau's branch, just as it closed Ishmael's in chapter 25. The pattern is consistent: the non-chosen line is recorded and blessed, then set aside, and the narrative follows the line of promise.

Esau's departure to Seir echoes Lot's separation from Abraham: the land could not support both families' great wealth. Isaac's word to Esau, You will live by your sword, and Yahweh's word to Rebekah, Two nations are in your womb, came true. The list includes Amalek, whose descendants would later attack Israel in the wilderness (Exodus 17).

Verse 31 is striking: these kings reigned in Edom before any king reigned over the children of Israel. Edom had kings early, while Israel waited centuries. Yet God had promised Abraham and Jacob that kings would come from them. Christians have read this as pointing to David and to Jesus. God's timing is not ours, but He is faithful. The prophet Obadiah later addresses Edom's pride, while Amos 9:12 anticipates even a remnant of Edom being gathered under the name of the Lord.

Show What You Know

  1. What is the pattern Genesis follows with non-chosen lines?

  2. How does Esau's move echo Lot and Abraham?

  3. Who in Esau's line later attacked Israel?

  4. What is significant about verse 31?

  5. What hope does Amos 9:12 hold for Edom?
