A Sad Story

Name Date

Read the Story

This is a sad story from the Bible. Jacob's family lived near a city. Its name was Shechem. Jacob's girl, Dinah, went to see the women there.

The prince of that city did something very wrong to Dinah. Her brothers were very upset. Two brothers did not trust God. Simeon and Levi used a trick. They hurt many people in the city.

Jacob was upset with his sons. He told them they had brought trouble on him. The Bible tells us true stories, even sad ones. God wants us to be kind to all. He wants us to let Him make things right. We should not pay people back.

Anger and Revenge

Name Date

Read the Story

Jacob's family settled near the city of Shechem. Dinah, the daughter of Leah, went out to visit the women of the land. Shechem, the son of the ruler Hamor, took her and dishonored her. Then he wanted to marry her, and his father asked Jacob to let their peoples join together.

Jacob's sons were grieved and very angry. They answered deceitfully. They said they would agree only if every man in the city received the covenant sign of circumcision. Hamor and Shechem agreed.

On the third day, while the men were in pain, Simeon and Levi took their swords and attacked the city. They killed the men, including Hamor and Shechem, and took Dinah home. The other brothers plundered the city. Jacob said, You have troubled me. Simeon and Levi said Shechem had treated their sister wrongly.

Memory Verse

Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have troubled me, to make me odious to the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I am few in number. They will gather themselves together against me and strike me, and I will be destroyed, I and my house.”

Genesis 34 · Grade 4

When Anger Takes Over

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 34 is one of the hardest chapters in Genesis. A great wrong was done to Dinah by Shechem, a powerful prince. The Bible clearly calls it a disgraceful thing that should not be done. God cares deeply about people who are harmed.

Jacob's sons were right to be grieved, but they let their anger turn into deceit and revenge. They even misused the sign of God's covenant as part of their trick. Simeon and Levi attacked a whole city, punishing many people who had not done the wrong.

Jacob worried about the danger to his family, and later, at the end of his life, he condemned Simeon and Levi's cruel anger (Genesis 49:5-7). In the New Testament, Romans 12:19 tells believers not to take revenge, but to leave it to God.

Show What You Know

  1. How does the Bible describe what was done to Dinah?

  2. How did the brothers misuse God's covenant sign?

  3. What was wrong with Simeon and Levi's revenge?

  4. What does Romans 12:19 teach?

Think About It

  1. It is right to be upset when someone is hurt. What are good ways to respond when you are angry about something wrong?

  2. If someone hurts you or someone you love, who are safe adults you can tell?

Memory Verse

Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have troubled me, to make me odious to the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I am few in number. They will gather themselves together against me and strike me, and I will be destroyed, I and my house.”

Genesis 34 · Grade 5

Justice and Revenge

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 34 records a grievous event without softening it. Jacob's family has settled near Shechem rather than returning to Bethel as Jacob vowed. Dinah goes out to visit the women of the land, and Shechem, a prince, seizes and violates her. Scripture names the act folly in Israel, a thing that ought not to be done. God's Word takes the harm done to Dinah seriously. Notably, Jacob's response is strangely passive; he waits in silence.

Dinah's brothers are rightly grieved, but their response becomes sin. They answer deceitfully, turning the holy covenant sign of circumcision into a weapon. While the men of the city are recovering, Simeon and Levi kill them, and the brothers plunder the city. A wrong done by one man is answered with deceit and violence against a whole city.

Jacob rebukes his sons, but mainly for the danger they have caused him. They reply with a question that ends the chapter unresolved: Should he deal with our sister as with a prostitute? Genesis 49:5-7 later gives God's verdict through Jacob: Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce. This chapter teaches that God hates both the abuse of the vulnerable and sinful revenge. Justice belongs to God (Romans 12:19), and protecting the vulnerable must be done righteously. Above all, it shows how badly Jacob's family needed a Redeemer.

Show What You Know

  1. What earlier vow had Jacob not yet fulfilled when this happened?

  2. How does Scripture describe the wrong done to Dinah?

  3. How did the brothers' response become sin?

  4. How does Genesis 49:5-7 judge Simeon and Levi's actions?

  5. What two things does this chapter show that God hates?

Think About It

  1. How can Christians stand up for people who have been hurt in a way that honors God?

  2. Jacob's family needed a Redeemer. How does this chapter make you thankful for Jesus?

Memory Verse

Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have troubled me, to make me odious to the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I am few in number. They will gather themselves together against me and strike me, and I will be destroyed, I and my house.”
