Genesis 34 · Grade 5
Justice and Revenge
Read and Think
Genesis 34 records a grievous event without softening it. Jacob's family has settled near Shechem rather than returning to Bethel as Jacob vowed. Dinah goes out to visit the women of the land, and Shechem, a prince, seizes and violates her. Scripture names the act folly in Israel, a thing that ought not to be done. God's Word takes the harm done to Dinah seriously. Notably, Jacob's response is strangely passive; he waits in silence.
Dinah's brothers are rightly grieved, but their response becomes sin. They answer deceitfully, turning the holy covenant sign of circumcision into a weapon. While the men of the city are recovering, Simeon and Levi kill them, and the brothers plunder the city. A wrong done by one man is answered with deceit and violence against a whole city.
Jacob rebukes his sons, but mainly for the danger they have caused him. They reply with a question that ends the chapter unresolved: Should he deal with our sister as with a prostitute? Genesis 49:5-7 later gives God's verdict through Jacob: Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce. This chapter teaches that God hates both the abuse of the vulnerable and sinful revenge. Justice belongs to God (Romans 12:19), and protecting the vulnerable must be done righteously. Above all, it shows how badly Jacob's family needed a Redeemer.

Memory Verse
“Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have troubled me, to make me odious to the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I am few in number. They will gather themselves together against me and strike me, and I will be destroyed, I and my house.””
