Israel

Name Date

Read the Story

The angels of God met Jacob, and he called the place Mahanaim, meaning two camps. Jacob sent messengers to Esau, but they returned saying Esau was coming with four hundred men. Jacob was greatly afraid. He divided his people into two groups.

Jacob prayed, God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Yahweh. He said he was not worthy of God's kindness and asked God to save him from his brother. He reminded God of His promise. Then he sent hundreds of goats, sheep, camels, cows and donkeys to Esau as a gift.

That night Jacob sent his family across the Jabbok stream and stayed alone. A man wrestled with him until daybreak. The man touched Jacob's hip, but Jacob held on and said, I won't let you go unless you bless me. The man said, Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed. Jacob named the place Peniel, saying, I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.

Memory Verse

He said, “Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.”

Genesis 32 · Grade 4

Wrestling and Blessing

Name Date

Read and Think

Twenty years earlier, Jacob had fled from Esau. Now he must face him again. His fear drove him to pray one of the first recorded prayers in the Bible. It is a model prayer: he addressed God, remembered God's promises, confessed his unworthiness, and asked for help.

That night, alone, Jacob wrestled with a mysterious man. Hosea 12:4 says Jacob struggled with the angel, wept and sought his favor. Jacob had spent his life grabbing blessings by his own strength. Now he clung to God and begged for a blessing that only God could give.

God touched Jacob's hip and changed his name. Jacob had meant heel-grabber or deceiver. The man said Jacob had fought with God, and his new name Israel was given because of that. Jacob walked away limping, weaker in body but stronger in faith. Sometimes God makes us weak so that we will depend on Him.

  2. What did Jacob do differently this time to get a blessing?

  3. What does the name Israel mean?

Genesis 32 · Grade 5

Prevailing by Clinging

Name Date

Read and Think

Jacob returns to the land of promise facing his greatest fear: Esau. God graciously sends angels to meet him at Mahanaim, a reminder that heaven's army surrounds him. Still, news of Esau's four hundred men leaves Jacob greatly afraid and was distressed. He takes practical steps, but first he prays. His prayer (verses 9-12) appeals to God's covenant name and promises, humbly confesses, I am not worthy of the least of all the loving kindnesses, and of all the truth, which you have shown to your servant, and boldly asks for deliverance.

At the Jabbok, alone in the night, a man wrestles with Jacob until daybreak. The man is later revealed to be God Himself in human form (verse 30; Hosea 12:3-5). With a touch He dislocates Jacob's hip, showing He could have ended the struggle at any time. The fight changes from wrestling to clinging: I won't let you go unless you bless me.

God asks Jacob his name, forcing him to confess, Jacob, the heel-grabber, the very name he had denied in front of Isaac. Then God gives him a new name, Israel. Jacob calls the place Peniel, the face of God, amazed that he has seen God and lived. As the sun rises, Jacob limps on. His strength is broken, but his faith is renewed. In the New Testament, Paul writes that when he is weak, he is strong (2 Corinthians 12:10).

Show What You Know

  1. How did God encourage Jacob before Esau arrived?

  2. What elements make Jacob's prayer a model for us?

  3. How does the hip injury show who was really in control?

  4. Why was it significant that Jacob had to say his name?

  5. How does 2 Corinthians 12:10 connect to Jacob's limp?

Think About It

  1. Jacob's struggle ended with clinging and asking. What would it look like for you to cling to God in prayer?

  2. Why do you think God sometimes allows painful experiences that change us?

Memory Verse

He said, “Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.”
