Genesis 32 · Grade 4
Wrestling and Blessing
Read and Think
Twenty years earlier, Jacob had fled from Esau. Now he must face him again. His fear drove him to pray one of the first recorded prayers in the Bible. It is a model prayer: he addressed God, remembered God's promises, confessed his unworthiness, and asked for help.
That night, alone, Jacob wrestled with a mysterious man. Hosea 12:4 says Jacob struggled with the angel, wept and sought his favor. Jacob had spent his life grabbing blessings by his own strength. Now he clung to God and begged for a blessing that only God could give.
God touched Jacob's hip and changed his name. Jacob had meant heel-grabber or deceiver. The man said Jacob had fought with God, and his new name Israel was given because of that. Jacob walked away limping, weaker in body but stronger in faith. Sometimes God makes us weak so that we will depend on Him.
